45 YEARS

(Romance drama)

The interesting thing about seeing a movie at the Avon is that people hang around the lobby and sidewalk talking about it. Everyone seemed to have the same reaction: Is that all there is? Not to say that the movie isn’t compelling and superlatively acted.

Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay star as a couple about to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. Kate and Geoff live quietly on the English countryside, childless but devoted to their dog. Days before their anniversary party, Geoff receives a letter telling him that his former girlfriend’s body had been found where she had fallen in a glacier when they were hiking in the Alps.

Geoff’s behavior radically changes. He starts smoking again. He sits brooding on a park bench. He unpacks photos and items that had been packed away for years in the attic. A secret is discovered, which changes Kate as much as it had affected Geoff.

The movie ends at the party, where little has changed, yet everything has changed.

While they dance to “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” listen to the words. The movie ends and you are left wondering what will happen in days to come.

While we were looking for more, we must say that Rampling and Courtenay gave us so much. You will feel for both of them. Rampling is nominated for an Academy Award, and her performance is certainly worthy.

Rated R because of some language and sensual scenes. This is a movie for older folks, not because of the language or sex, but because of the maturity of the subject matter.
