60th wedding anniversary

Posted

On Oct. 2, Doreen and Robert Anderson of Cranston will celebrate 60 years of marriage. Married in Providence at Gloria Dei in 1954, Doreen moved to Cranston when she was 7 and Bob move to Cranston when he was 4. They have lived all 60 years in Cranston, with more than 50 in their current home. They met at Cranston High School in 10th grade, where they were high school sweethearts.

Bob attended Chester Barrows, Valentine Almy, Dutemple, Briggs and Cranston High, and Doreen attended Norwood Avenue Primary, Rhodes, Norwood Avenue Grammar and Cranston High.

They have two children: Donald, who passed away in 1970, and Jeff, who is married with children and resides in Virginia. They have three grandchildren who often visit Cranston for “camp” with their grandparents.

Both avid Cranston Herald readers, Doreen likes Cranston because she’s lived here all her life. She knows where everything is. Bob likes Cranston “because I have no reason to go anywhere else.”

Bob spent his career as a toolmaker at Bulova Watch and Federal Products, and Doreen was a bank teller at Industrial Trust (now part of Bank of America), a stay-at-home mom and office administrator at the Cranston Center and West Bay Residential Services.

They remember growing up in Cranston during World War II. Their fathers both worked at the shipyard, there were lots of rationing, air raids and lots of tanks/jeeps/trucks on flatbeds in the Auburn freight yards.

They say the secret to 60 years is that there are no secrets, along with a little bit of luck and good health.
