Action Auto Parts wins second national title in three seasons

Posted

Two years ago, the Johnston-based Action Auto Parts 60’s softball team won the over-60 Senior Softball Winter National in Ft. Myers.

Earlier this month, they did it again.

The tournament is based on a seeding round to determine the seeding positions for the tournament bracket, and then a double elimination bracket format, but because of heavy rains on the final day, the tournament reverted to a single elimination format.

Action Auto ended up with the top seed in the seeding round by virtue of two wins in two games. The top seed distinction came from having the greatest combined run differential among the undefeated teams.

They made it to the winner’s bracket finals before the skies emptied. As a result of maintaining the largest run differential throughout the tournament, Action Auto was declared the champions of the over-60 division.

It was the second win in three years in the tournament. Next year, as the players on the team get slightly older, the team will move into the 65-year-old division.

Frank DeCorpo was the tournament MVP and member of the All-Tournament team, while Manny Costa, Paul Danesi, Mario DeAngelis and Bobby Pierce were also selected to the All-Tournament team. Team members are Manny Costa, Al Mello, Steve Aldrich, Paul D’Errico, Paul Danesi, Jimmy Dean, Mario DeAngelis, Frank DeCorpo, Jimmy Gemma, Bobby Olilla, Bobby Pierce, Tom Purvis, Tony Rozzero, Ken Sheehan.
