Anti-bullying efforts taken at JHS

Anti-bullying efforts take center stage at Johnston High School

Posted

Bullying is an issue that we take very seriously here at Johnston High School. In order to prevent it as much as possible, different organizations within our school community have dedicated a few days to raise awareness.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, the organization S.A.D.D. – Students Against Dangerous Decisions – coordinated a presentation for the freshmen and sophomore classes about the issue of bullying. Following this powerful presentation, the junior class student council organized a successful dress down day for the teachers on Friday, Oct. 17. Proceeds from this dress down day will go to an anti-bullying organization.

Dress down days occur every other week at Johnston High, and at busy times of the year, they occur every week. Each class – freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors – takes a turn every time and have the members of their student councils bring in breakfast foods for the teachers who donate to the cause they’re supporting.

Friday, Oct. 17 was also a spirit day at Johnston High. Spirit days occur every so often, and all four of the classes compete to see which class has the most students dressed according to the particular theme. This spirit day was dedicated to raising awareness of bullying, and everyone was told to wear blue.

On the morning of each spirit day, student council members go to each homeroom and tally up the number of students dressed, and from there, calculate a percentage to see which class participated the most. Each class is awarded a certain number of points based on their participation. These spirit points are then factored in to the Most Spirited Class award, which is given out at the Senior Send-Off in May.

The results of the anti-bullying spirit day are as follows: fourth place, seniors; third place, juniors; second place, sophomores; and first place, freshmen.

The Johnston High School community would like to reiterate the fact that bullying is a serious issue, and encourage everyone to do anything in their power to raise awareness in order to prevent it.
