Batastini School of Basketball set for development camps

Beginning next week, Batastini School of Basketball (BSB) will hold back-to-back weeks of specialized and skill-focused basketball camps.

Offensive Improvement Camp runs from Monday-Thursday, Aug. 11-14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guard/Point Guard Clinic runs from Monday-Thursday, Aug. 18-21 from 9 a.m. to 12 pm. The goal of the camp and clinic is for campers to gain greater basketball IQ and a more in-depth understanding of offensive skills and strategies.

Offered to boys and girls grades 3-12, the Offensive Improvement Camp will focus on individual as well as team offensive concepts. Individual skill instruction will concentrate on ball-handling, 1-on-1 play, attacking the rim and passing under pressure. Particular attention is given to proper shooting mechanics. Team concepts such as spacing, movement without the ball, screening and using screens, as well as creating opportunities for teammates will be stressed.

Both camps are located at the Boys & Girls Club of Warwick at 42 Frederick Street, Warwick, RI, 02888.

The camp is $200 per player for the week or $60 per player for a day-rate. There a $40 sibling discount.

Offered to boys and girls grades 6-12, the Guard/Point Guard Clinic will focus on all facets of point guard and guard play, including: running an offense, decision-making, leadership and communication skills, penetrating to create for teammates, passing, intense ball-handling development, three-point shooting and mid-range jump shooting. The clinic is $100 per player for the week or $30 per player for a day-rate. There is $20 sibling discount.

Campers can sign up in two ways. Online sign-ups are open until the Sunday before the camp or clinic begins. Players can walk-in and sign-up any day. Christina Sheehan (née Batastini) is the President and head instructor of the Batastini School of Basketball. She is the current head coach of the Lincoln School girl's varsity basketball program. Christina has over twenty years experience in coaching and playing basketball. She has a Masters in Education from Harvard University and a BA in American Studies from Stanford University. She is also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

A Rhode Island native, she played high school basketball at Classical High School in Providence earning Parade and Nike All-American honors and the Gatorade Player of New England award. The Providence Journal named Batastini as one of the most influential sports figures in Rhode Island’s last one hundred years. She was also recently inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame.

Batastini earned a full scholarship to Stanford University. In her four years from 1996-2000, the nationally ranked Stanford Cardinal won three Pacific-10 Championships and played in the 1997 NCAA Final Four in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated Stanford with a B.A. in American Studies with a Specialization in Race and Ethnicity.

Following her collegiate career, Batastini played professionally for four years in Italy, Switzerland, Norway, and Sweden. She consistently ranked among the league leaders in scoring, assists, and three-point shooting percentage.

She also coached youth basketball and conducted youth basketball clinics in Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland. In her last season overseas she was the player/coach for Elfic Fribourg, a top-level professional Swiss team. In four seasons in Europe she played in over ten different countries.

In her first year back in the United States, Batastini was an assistant coach for the Brown University women’s basketball team and helped lead the team to the best start in Brown University women’s basketball history.

Batastini is founder of Team BSB, an AAU organization dedicated to offording opportunities to girl's basketball players throughout the Northeast. She also is a freelance television basketball color analyst for NESN, Cox Sports, and Verzon Fios.

Batastini has provided individual instruction for six years. She has worked with over a hundred players.
