Civics and cereal: Thornton students take part in first voting experience

Posted

Nov. 7 was a very busy day in Ms. Linda Greco’s first-grade class at Thornton Elementary School in Johnston. Prior to the election, the students learned about famous people and leaders of the past and present.

“With Election Day around the corner, the children held their own first-time voting experience,” Greco said. “Yet it was not for a person; but it was for their favorite breakfast cereal sold at school at breakfast.”

The candidates were Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Rice Krispies, and Cinnamon Chex. Prior the vote, the students each sampled the cereals. Then they received their private ballot and entered the classroom-built voting booth to cast their vote. Then they folded their ballots for secrecy and placed them in a ballot box, also made in the classroom.

In all, 17 students were in attendance to cast a vote, and Mayor Joseph Polisena visited the classroom. The mayor also took questions from the students after telling them how important it is to vote, and that every vote counts.

The winner was Cinnamon Toast Crunch, by one vote.
