“Working together, making a difference.”

That has long been the motto of the Johnston Police Department, which this week issued an important invitation through its Community Policing Unit.

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, the Community Policing Unit – which is celebrating the 20th anniversary season of the popular “Walk with Cops” program – will host its 15th annual Community Cookout.

Chief of Police Richard S. Tamburini this week issued an open invitation for all residents to join Mayor Joseph Polisena and the Community Policing Unit at the event, being held in conjunction with the National Night Out.

“This is the 15th year we’ve hosted this cookout,” Tamburini said. “We’re hoping for good weather and a large turnout as we continue to expand community spirit and police partnerships. There will be food, fun, raffles and entertainment.”

Tamburini said the cookout will be held in the famed Dunn Building at Johnston War Memorial Park beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is free.

People who’d like further information about Tuesday night’s National Night Out should call the department’s Special Services Division at 401-231-4210 and speak with Capt. Thomas H. Dolan at ext. 3138 or Sgt. Troy Maddocks at ext. 3156. Marie Conti, Community Policing Walk with Cops, can be reached at 401-228-7377.

The National Night Out is held the first Tuesday of August and designed as a community-police awareness event throughout the country. It has been celebrated throughout the country since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.
