Contestants get their fill at pie-eating contest

The apple pie-eating contest is always a fun-filled favorite for crowds at the annual Apple Fest celebration, and this year’s competition was no different.

Mia Foley of Providence beat back a challenge from seven or so others to win the children’s division, taking home a special gift basket from Cherry Hill Manor. Meanwhile, last year’s youth winner, Iyman Musa, ate his way to the teenage division title.

Iyman again held off all challengers and raised his arms in jubilation – just as he did a year ago on the main stage inside Johnston War Memorial Park – by devouring a six-inch apple pie baked especially for the contest by Appleland Orchards of Smithfield.

In the adult division, Seth Daley polished off a 10-inch pie to win his first-ever title.

“Not only did Seth win the 2015 championship, he’s going to ‘The Rhode Show’ for another contest,” said Lou Mansolillo, who helped organize all three pie-eating contests and was once the Apple Fest chairman.

Daly will soon be competing one-on-one against Michaela Johnson, who co-anchors WPRI’s “The Rhode Show” with Will Gilbert.
