Edgewood-Jr. Friars golf tournament was a hole-in-one

To say that the Edgewood Hawks-Providence Junior Friars Hockey Association’s second annual golf tournament was par excellence would be an understatement.

From the time a field of 65 golfers checked in and received specially-designed gift bag coolers until a total of 90 people finished the post-tourney dinner that was prepared and cooked by Vin Martucci, the youth hockey group put its best foot forward in many different ways.

Moreover, last Saturday’s sparkling sun only added to the gloriously green and well-manicured 18-hole layout at Cranston Country Club that a foursome headed by Mike Soscia found to its liking and took home first place.

Likewise, golfers who played in Vic Nesters second-place foursome and third place finisher Nick Iannelli’s group, were in high praise of what went on before, during and even after the benefit fundraising event was over.

Each golfer, for example, opened his cooler-like bag and found a sleeve of top-rate golf balls, a koozie and polo shirt with the custom-designed tourney logo.

Once all the golfers registered for the day with tourney staffers Nicole Fontenault, Jim Forcier, David Barber and Kevin Fontenault, they headed out to CCC’s popular putting green and seemingly jam-packed driving range and also enjoyed what many golfers called “a really unique twist that made today even more special.”

And there was a catering truck, which even received rave reviews from a number of admirers who complimented owner Paul Evangelista about the overall make-up of his well-equipped vehicle that was parked on the turn.

“This is great stuff,” offered Rick Torres, a Cranston Fire Fighter who serves as assistant coach for the URI women’s club hockey team, offered. “Saugy hot dogs, meatball sandwiches, lite beer…it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Evangelista, who along with his wife Maria owns and operates Lollipop Learning Center in Johnston, were also members of the hard-working committee that put in a full day on and off the course. While Paul prepared countless sandwiches for the golfers, Matt Bourski – another committee member – manned the ice-cold beverage side of Evangelista’s catering truck.

“Like the sign says,” one golfer noted while pointing to the truck, “Primetime (Catering). This is certainly a big-time, primetime production.”

Few people, if any, would dispute that theory. And especially Jim Bethune, who sank a hole-in-one and staked claim to a trip to Las Vegas along with a set of golf clubs that were provided for the tourney by Flood Ford and Golfers Warehouse.

The day also featured a Best Dressed Award that Chairperson Nicole Fontenault named “The Fancy Pants Award” that went to Forcier, Zach Giuttari, Matthew Giuttari and Ian Giuttari.
