Johnston High School will begin the 2016-17 academic year with a new leader.

Zachary S. Farrell, who has served as principal since 2013 and been part of the administration on Cherry Hill since 2010, submitted an official letter of resignation Tuesday afternoon to Janice Mele, chair of the Johnston School Committee. He will be moving to Cranston Public Schools to serve as an assistant principal at Cranston High School West.

“It has been a great honor to serve the people of Johnston and I have greatly enjoyed by tenure with the Johnston Public Schools. I will cherish all of the fond memories, experiences and friendships I have amassed along the way,” his letter reads.

It continues: “I will be pleased to assist in the transition of my duties so that preparation for the upcoming school year will proceed smoothly. I am also available to assist my successor in this process prior to my departure.”

Superintendent Dr. Bernard DiLullo, who is on vacation this week, said he learned of Farrell’s decision Tuesday and wished him the best of luck in his new position.

“Zach Farrell will be missed here in Johnston,” he said.

DiLullo did not mention a possible successor or the process that will be used to fill the principal’s post.

Farrell becomes the second Johnston High administrator to leave this year. Francesca Salvadore, who was appointed assistant principal two years ago, left the post to return to the Providence school department.

“I am very grateful for the support I have received from the members of the Johnston High School community over the past seven years,” Farrell said. “My decision to leave was not an easy one, but I think it is the right one to make for my family at this stage of our lives. I am extremely proud of the many great accomplishments we have achieved together through the amazing work of our wonderful faculty, and I am confident that the progress will continue.”

He added: “I would also like to say a special thank you to the students of Johnston High School. It ahs been an honor to serve as your principal. It has always been you that have instilled in me a sense of purpose and resolve to do my best. Johnston High School is and always will be a great school because of you and I encourage you to always do your best.”

Farrell’s educational journey began at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick. From there, he graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in history and political science. He went on to do graduate work at Providence College, where he received his master’s degree in European history.

Farrell’s career continued at North Providence High School where he served as a social studies teacher from 2002 to 2010, the year he began his career in Johnston. He and his wife Sheri live in Johnston with their children, Ella, 6, and Evan, 4.
