A former Town Council member has been charged after allegedly entering the home of a 91-year-old neighbor and taking $1,800 in cash.

Melanie K. Turner, 51, of 27A Starr St., is charged with one count of breaking and entering into a dwelling without consent. She was arrested and arraigned on Aug. 7, and released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

The incident in question occurred on Aug. 2, according to police, according to Police Maj. Frank Levesque. The victim in the case told police she suspected Turner – who she described as a friend and neighbor – had taken the money.

Detective James Brady led the investigation of the incident, which reportedly included six witnesses identifying Turner from surveillance video. According to Brady’s narrative report, Turner returned $750 of the stolen cash and indicated to police she would make restitution for the remainder of the money.

Turner was elected to the District 1 seat on the council in 2008, but lost her bid for a new term in 2010.

She is due back in court Oct. 9.
