Free concerts coming to Johnston War Memorial Park

Glenn Carroll, president of the non-profit Johnston Community Center Association, has been bombarded with calls ever since the announcement that the group is bringing back Concerts in the Park, beginning with tomorrow night’s kickoff featuring nationally famous singer Erika Van Pelt and family.

“No, we’re not kidding,” Carroll said with a smile of his response to one telephone query. That caller asked if the concert was in fact free, and whether it is the same Van Pelt who reached the top 10 of television’s “American Idol.”

“My answer to both questions was, ‘Yes, we hope we see you next Friday night.’”

The concert will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. inside Johnston War Memorial Park, and Carroll urged Johnstonians to bring their beach or lawn chairs, blankets and coolers and make a night of it with some great family entertainment.

Carroll also issued a reminder about the free concert scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, which will feature Jimmy Mazz – a.k.a. James Mazzaferro – a multi-talented entertainer who writes and performs many completely different and themed shows.

During Wednesday night’s show, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 8 p.m. also inside Johnston War Memorial Park, Mazz will take people on what he calls “a non-stop ride through his favorite songs by a wide variety of performers, singing everything from classics and standards all the way to today’s contemporary artists.”

“I’ll focus on the Las Vegas strip, then it’s off to Motown, with a quick a quick stop in Nashville for some good old country music,” Mazz said via telephone from his year-round home in Florida.
