Friends of Mohr Library hold book sale

The Friends of Mohr Library recently held another of its highly-popular used book sales, and because a good size crowed turned out and supported the event.

The non-profit group will be able to again expand its sponsorships of programs at Johnston’s only public library.

“We had a crowd showing up before we opened the doors at noon on Friday,” said Helen Antonizio, who serves as the president of the Friends. “People were even waiting at the door before the library opened Saturday. It was fairly steady most of the time with good sales.”

Antonizio and the Friends – who have added some new members of the past few months and even some new volunteers – will be able to sponsor most of the summer reading programs at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library.

“We had a good time getting to know even more of our friendly fellow Johnston library lovers,” Antonizio said. “Even more than that money we earn to support extras at the library is the joy we have in seeing someone find a book by an author they love, or a little one clutching a book to take home for his or her own.”

Although Friends have added some new members, Antonizio is hoping other people will become part of the public library’s valuable “right arm.”

“We welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues or through volunteering their time,” she said.

In addition to sponsoring such important events as the Summer Reading Program, the Friends also provide discounted zoo and museum tickets, programs like the recent Victorian Afternoon, and materials for art classes.

“We are also looking forward to sponsoring a music program or two later this year,” Antonizio said. “Everyone loves music.”

Although no date – or artists – have been announced for the music programs, Antonizio encouraged “any and all people who’d like to help the Friends further expand our horizons” to call 401-231-4980 and press 7.
