Gabriel Justin “Gibby” Vantrisco, (USAF/USA/USAR, Ret.), formerly of Archer Avenue, Johnston, was relieved of his suffering on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Rhode Island Veterans’ Home in Bristol where he had resided for the past four years.

Born on May 6, 1934 in Unity, Maine, to Marco and Maria (Di Giustini) Vantrisco, he was the brother of Joseph Ventrisco of Johnston and the nephew of the late Antonio Di Giustini. A career United States military veteran, he proudly served his country for over 20 years. He first enlisted in the Air Force at the young age of 17 in 1951 and served four years. Following that, he enlisted in the Army and later the Army Reserves, retiring in 1973. He achieved the rank of Sergeant having served in Germany, Indochina, Vietnam, and Korea and was awarded the Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service & Campaign, and Army Commendation Medals. In addition, he received two overseas service bars.

Gibby was a proud and dedicated member of Johnston Fire Department Hose Co. 3, volunteering his time and service there for many years. He was a staunch Boston Red Sox supporter and avid sports fan. An always smiling, always hat-wearing character, his trademarks were Marlboro 100s cigarettes, lousy coffee, and the sports section of any newspaper. His warm personality endeared him to his brother and his nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who mourn him. He shared a special bond with many of the residents and caring staff at the RI Veterans’ Home, especially Jen and Dave.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 2nd, beginning with visitation at the Berarducci Home, corner of Knight and Grove Streets, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Peter Gower, Pastor, at Our Lady of Grace Church, Johnston. Family members including nephews and a niece served as pallbearers. Following the bestowal of full US military honors, Gibby was laid to rest alongside his parents and uncle in St. Ann's Cemetery in Cranston.

Memorial contributions to the New RI Veterans' Home Furnishings Account, 480 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI, 02809 would be appreciated.
