Gary V. Mazzie Memorial Golf Tournament set for Monday

The Johnston High School Athletic Hall of Fame, which has honored dozens of one-time prolific Panthers who have distinguished the Columbia Blue and White, is about to rewrite its brief yet storied history.

The all-volunteer group that governs the now 5-year-old Athletic Hall of Fame will host the first-ever Gary V. Mazzie Memorial Golf Tournament at the picturesque and always-well-groomed Glocester Country Club on Monday.

Tee-off is 12:30 p.m. and the entrance fee is $100 per golfer and includes golf, cart, post-tourney dinner and prizes.

In keeping with tradition, proceeds will now benefit the JHS Athletic Hall of Fame and Scholarship Fund. Non-golfers are also invited to attend the dinner and tickets are only $35 per person.

Although Glocester Country Club, which is located off Putnam Pike (Route 44) in Harmony and has been around since 1923, is only a nine-hole course, Monday’s tourney will be 18 holes and feature the scramble scoring format.

“We’re hoping for a complete sellout,” offered Jim Hopkins, the event’s chairperson and long-time friend and colleague of the late Mazzie. “This is the beginning of another tradition in memory of a great man who touched so many lives during his time at JHS.”

Mazzie, who was highly respected as a teacher, coach and athletic administrator, was also the Panthers’ one-time golf coach whose career spanned four decades on Cherry Hill. He also founded the now-prestigious Athletic Hall of Fame five years ago.

“Glocester (Country Club) is ideal for our fundraising event,” Hopkins, who was also a teacher, coach and athletic administrator during a highly-successful career at JHS, offered. “It’s located on the shores of Waterman Lake, and even on a hot and humid day, you get a breeze off the water.”

Hopkins also announced that people who don’t play golf and would still like to help the JHS Athletic Hall of Fame and its new Scholarship Fund can sponsor memorial signs that will be placed at various locations around the course.

People who would like more information should call recent Hall of Fame inductee and committee volunteer Dennis Quaranta at (401) 934-1969 or email Hopkins at coachjhop@cox.net.

The course measures 2,564 yards from the red tees and 2,802 from the blue tees. Glocester Country Club, which also has a sandy beach and pro shop, is located in Greenville off Putnam Pike (Route 44) near Chester’s Restaurant. Those who would like more information about the 9-hole layout should call (401) 949-3330.
