Posted

For those who enjoy playing tournament golf and helping one of the state’s most important charities, Special Olympics Rhode Island has a unique opportunity.

SORI will hold two tournaments, on Aug. 1 and Aug. 8, at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln and the upgraded Crestwood Country Club located in Rehoboth, Mass.

Then on Saturday, Aug. 20, the Ocean State Harley Owners Group will hold the Gold Medal Poker Run, rain or shine, with registration running from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Russ’ Ocean State Harley-Davidson at 435 Nooseneck Hill Road in Exeter. All motorcycles are welcome, and entry is $30 person. All proceeds will benefit SORI. For full information and registration, visit oshog.org.

“August will be an exceptional month for SORI,” said Dennis DeJesus, a Cranston native who serves as president and CEO of SORI. “Your support of these events enables more than 3,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities to train and compete year-round at 21 Olympic-type events, completely free of charge.”

Yet another unique event – the 23rd annual Waterfront Canoe Race – will be held at Finn’s Harborside, 38 Water St. in East Greenwich, on Sunday, Aug. 7. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., and the race – sponsored by the famed restaurant – starts at 12:30 p.m. The entry fee is $30 per person. For questions, call 401-884-6363.

2016 JOHN HENDERSON GOLF TOURNAMENT

“This golf tournament has been a huge supporter of SORI,” DeJesus said. “It’s a special event played at a special country club.”

The Aug. 1 tournament has various sponsorship levels. A single golf package includes lunch and dinner, and the entry fee is $200. Cart sponsorships are also available for $200 and people can become a tee sponsor for just $125.

Registration will run from 11:30 a.m. to the 1 p.m. shotgun start. For more information or registration please call Tracey Garabedian at 401-349-4900.

LAW ENFORCEMENT CHARITY GOLF TOURNEY

The annual Law Enforcement Charity Golf Tournament, which also benefits SORI, is an offshoot of the highly successful torch run and is supported by 35 police and fire departments, along with the Rhode Island State Police and correction officers.

“Those groups also provide volunteer support for all Special Olympics Rhode Island area and state competitors by presenting medals to our athletes,” DeJesus said. “This golf tourney is an exceptional event.”

DeJesus said the tourney will used the Texas Scramble format and begin with registration at 6:30 a.m., followed by a continental breakfast from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will follow the golf. The entry fee is $125 per player. Crestwood Country Club is located at 90 Wheeler St. in Rehoboth, Mass.
