Impressive ‘Stop Kiss’ at Epic Theatre

Posted

Cranston’s Epic Theatre has once again brought a provocative, impressive one-act play to its Theatre 82 stage. “Stop Kiss” by Diana Son, directed by Blanche Case, can be labeled as a “relationship play,” but it is so much more. Each scene alternates between the present and the past, as Callie (Lauren Odenwalder) meets Sara (Kerry Giorgi) and their relationship develops slowly and unsteadily.

We learn at the beginning that the two women were attacked in a park during the early morning hours. One ends up with sore ribs, the other in a coma. A detective tries to figure out why.

The underlying attraction that the two women have for each other is in total denial. Whenever the two of them start to get emotionally or physically close, one or both back off.

One kiss, and the violent reaction of a stranger changes their lives.

The scenes are short and the over-twenty costume changes by Odenwalder, who used all of her own clothes, is a major accomplishment.

The play has some deep psychological and sexual undertones that hold your interest until the final emotional conclusion.

“Stop Kiss” is at Epic’s Theatre 82, located at the newly renovated Characters Café at 80 Rolfe Square in Cranston. Their grand reopening is Friday, Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. You’re invited to stop by for some free food tastings, live music and more. Check out their new menu and pick up a brochure listing their wide variety of events.
