JHS teams shine at Decathlon

Posted

On Sunday, March 11, the CCRI Warwick campus hosted the annual Rhode Island Academic Decathlon competition. This year, 18 schools from across Rhode Island took part in a long day of testing in an attempt to take home the coveted first place trophy.

However, to win that prize, contestants must receive high scores on the following exams: math, economics, science, music, language and literature, essay, speech, interview, art and Super Quiz, which centered on history. Each year, the competition pertains to a certain topic, and 2012 was no exception. The grueling tests were focused around the Great Empires of Europe and imperialism.

Johnston Senior High School, once again, had enough members in their Decathlon club to enter two teams into the battle. After the written exam, the Super Quiz arrived where one member of each team had to answer five questions in the center of the CCRI auditorium. When answered correctly, the scores were added up and the team who had the most questions right would win the Super Quiz first place plaque.

In the end, Johnston Team 1 won the plaque, and Johnston Team 2 was not far behind, taking fourth place. Then it was time to announce the overall winners of the 2012 Academic Decathlon competition, which went to Bishop Hendricken. Johnston Team 1 came in second place, and Johnston Team 2 snagged fourth. Johnston continues to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with.
