JNP picks up first-ever Division II win

Posted

On a cold night in Portsmouth, the Johnston/North Providence co-op hockey team ended its drought. The Cougars beat Mt. Hope 3-1 for their first victory since moving up to Division II before last season. They went 0-18 last year and started this year 0-5.

The break through came despite an early 1-0 deficit. The Huskies got a goal from Nicholas Anania midway through the first period and carried the 1-0 lead into the second.

But JNP steadily got itself back in the game. Less than three minutes into the second period, Nicholas Threshier tied the game for JNP with an unassisted goal. The teams went to the break locked in the 1-1 tie.

With 5:44 left in the game, the Cougars broke through. Threshier scored again, with an assist from Stephen Morrison as JNP took the 2-1 lead. The Cougars got a goal from Morrison in the final seconds to put the victory on ice.

JNP improved to 1-5 while Mt. Hope fell to 1-6.

The Cougars will try to keep the momentum going with two games this weekend. They’ll face a tough challenge Friday when they take on unbeaten Lincoln at 8 p.m. at Dennis Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, but on Saturday they’ll host winless Toll Gate at the Smithfield rink at 6 p.m. (Sun Rise photos by William Geoghegan)
