The high-school football season does not begin in earnest until next week, but this weekend will offer an appetizer with the annual Injury Fund preseason games.

Events are being held around the state and benefit the long-running Injury Fund program that helps pay medical expenses for injured RIIL student-athletes. Nine sets of games will be staged, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday.

Johnston High School will travel to North Providence for a six-team affair, with each team playing a 24-minute contest. Johnston is set to face Burrillville in the second of three games, beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The first game at North Providence begins at 5:30 p.m. and pits Smithfield and North Smithfield. After the Panthers and Broncos square off, North Providence will play Ponaganset at 5 p.m.

Johnston is the only Division II team in the group. Ponaganset is in Division III, while Burrillville, North Smithfield and Smithfield are in Division IV.

Injury Fund action gets going at three sites on Thursday, with games at Conley Stadium beginning at 5 p.m., Mt. Hope High School at 5:30 p.m. and Warwick Vets at 6 p.m.

The games at North Providence are part of a five-event slate on Friday. Cranston Stadium, Westerly High School, Max Read Field and La Salle Academy will host the other games. La Salle is welcoming in Bishop Hendricken.

On Saturday, the weekend concludes when Scituate hosts PCD/Wheeler/Juanita Sanchez.

The regular season begins with non-league games on Sept. 12. Johnston will travel to four-time defending state champion Bishop Hendricken for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
