Johnston girls’ lacrosse off to hot start

There has been a rapid progression from Johnston’s first year in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League last year until now.

The Lady Panthers understandably struggled last spring to the tune of an 0-11 record.

But fast forward to this year, and the tables have completely turned for Johnston.

With some experience under their belts, the Lady Panthers came into this season with a whole new attitude, and it’s showed early on, as they’ve won three of their first four games.

At 3-1, Johnston has already exceeded this year’s expectations following a tough 2014 season.

“Last year was definitely a learning experience,” Johnston head coach Jay Areson said. “Last season was frustrating for out team, but now the girls are no longer intimidated and feel that they can play with anyone.”

As it was last year, Johnston will be led again this spring by Isabella DiRaimo.

DiRaimo, now a senior, led the team in scoring in her junior year and has already compiled 20 goals in Johnston’s first four games in recent weeks.

She will be a mainstay at midfield for Areson, as will Dana Desmarais, a defensive specialist, and multi-sport athlete, Lauren Tedesco.

Sisters Christina and Samantha Hardman will be the backbone of Johnston’s defense this season and have been solid early on.

DiRaimo, Desmarais, Tedesco and Christina Hardman, four seniors, will serve as co-captains this season for the Lady Panthers.

At attack, freshman Grace Sarah will be relied upon to provide some offense, as she is second in scoring for Johnston and had

some good lacrosse experience prior to high school.

Sophomore Loriann Samayoa will also contribute at attack and has been strong up and down the field.

Junior Jocelyn Cabral has also been impressive thus far all over the field, particularly helping to provide big defensive stops when the team has needed them.

In goal, sophomore Jacsmile Cassion will provide some experience after starting as a freshman. She stepped up and offered to play goal last season, and has continued to improve. Cassion has kept the Lady Panthers in every game this season.

Assisting Areson will be his wife, Amanda Areson.

After his team’s hot start, Jay Areson is now hoping that Johnston will makes its first playoff appearance sooner rather than later.

“My goal coming into the season was to win a few games,” Jay Areson said. “But now that we’ve exceeded that, I think that we can make the playoffs. With the leadership that we have, I think we can do it. Hopefully if we can make it there, we’ll make a deep run.”
