Lincoln School senior and Johnston resident Olivia Williams recently received an award from the Rhode Island Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (RICDHH) at the sixth annual Hearing Loss Expo in Providence.

Williams, who knows what it is like to succeed and thrive with hearing loss, has been a member of the planning team – also known as the “Dream Team” – at the Dare to Dream Leadership Conference at URI for the past two years.

This year’s Dare to Dream conference was held yesterday, and the theme was making connections and inspiring others. Williams lives in Johnston and will be attending Stonehill College in the fall.

Lincoln School officials noted that RICDHH has proclaimed May as Hearing Loss Awareness and Better Hearing and Speech Month.

The RICDHH hopes to promote and recognize the resources that are available to people who have different levels of hearing and to enhance their quality of life through education, technology and advocacy. Over 90,000 people living in Rhode Island are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened and deaf-blind, and the majority of this population is made up of hard of hearing and late-deafened people.

Lincoln School is a Quaker independent college preparatory school for girls founded in 1884, where high school academics and ethical standards challenge students from 2 years old through grade 12 to nurture their special talents and interests.
