Knights split pair of games against Genesee

Posted

The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled down to Florida on Friday to get its season started while the winter weather still looms here in Rhode Island. The Knights’ first two games of the trip were against Genesee Community College (N.Y.), as the teams faced off on both Sunday and Monday. The teams split the games, as the Knights took Game 1, 23-4, and dropped the second game, 1-0. With the split, the Knights are now 3-1 on the season.

Game 1: CCRI- 23

Genesee- 4

The Knights were scorching hot at the plate in Game 1, as they were able to score 23 runs in only six innings of batting. The Knights started with one run in the first, and then piled in six in the second, five in the third, four in the fourth and another six in the fifth. The score may have reached much higher, but the mercy rule held them in check. Every starter recorded at least one hit, while five Knights picked up multiple hits. A number of batters had monster days at the plate, especially the Knights’ one through three hitters, who were white hot at the dish. Co-captain Brandon Escalante (Pembroke, Fla.) led off for the Knights and he went 3-for-4 from the dish with four runs scored and three RBIs. Austin Davis (Hollywood, Fla.) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs. The No. 3 hitter, Travis Collins (Cranston, RI), also collected three hits in six at bats while adding four runs and three RBIs.

The Knights hit two home runs in the game with one coming from Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, Okla.), who also went 2-for-3 while knocking in five runs. Sophomore Edison Mercado (Providence, R.I.) hit the other one as he got a hold of a pitch and sent it way over the fence.

Jack Livingston (Niantic, Fla.) was the beneficiary for the Knights, as he pitched a solid five innings while only allowing three runs and striking out eight. He gave up a measly five hits, which was plenty good enough when your team scores 23 runs. Livingston now owns a 2-0 record on the young season.

Game 2: CCRI- 0

Genesee- 1

Baseball can be a very superstitious sport, and whether you are a believer in that or not, one cannot deny the facts. The Knights may have used up all their hits in Game 1 on Sunday, as Game 2 on Monday featured zero runs scored for CCRI after the 23-run outburst. The Knights still played tough, though, even without being able to buy a run. Justin Jacobsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) led the way for the Knights from the mound as he pitched a complete game in the 1-0 loss. Jacobsen was outstanding the entire game, only allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six. Most days that is more than enough for a pitcher to earn a win, but the Knights couldn’t buy a run for their pitcher.

Genesee was able to forget about Game 1, and it played excellent baseball in Game 2. It was able to steal away a win with a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze in the bottom of the last inning to take the 1-0 victory over the Knights.

The Knights didn’t have much time to think about their first two games, as they were set to play a doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game was against Burlington CC from New Jersey, and the second was against Rollins College JV (Winter Park, FL). Results from those games were unavailable at press time.

Rollins College is the new home for CCRI Baseball Alumnus T.J. Boyajian (Warwick, R.I.), who is currently batting .364 for the Tars with two triples, six runs scored and three RBIs.
