'Let's not forget our heroes'

Memorial Day observance planned Saturday at Johnston War Memorial Park

There will not be a Memorial Day parade in Johnston this weekend.

However, eight local organizations, headed by Mayor Joseph Polisena, will join forces for what promises to be a highly emotional and spectacular salute to all veterans on Saturday, May 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Johnston War Memorial Park grandstand.

Vin Jackvony, a program coordinator for the Johnston Recreation Department, said Saturday’s program will including a bell ringing to honor 42 men killed in action in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

“Let’s not forget our heroes,” Jackvony said during a request for community attendance earlier this week. “We’d like all Johnston residents to come and bring their children and relatives and let our future honor our past.”

Jackvony, who along with Johnston Recreation Director Dan Mazzulla, Assistant Director Matt LaFazia and the entire staff, is co-sponsoring the ceremony with Polisena, the Johnston Community Center Association, the town of Johnston, the Johnson Police Department, the Johnston High School Chorus, the Rhode Island National Guard and Operation Stand Down.

“We’re also hoping for a great sunny day,” LaFazia said. “If you remember, last year’s ceremony was canceled due to rain.”

Jackvony advised people that if, by chance, there is inclement weather they should check the recreation department’s website at www.johnstonrec.com. People may also call the department’s office, located inside Johnston War Memorial Park, at 272-3460.

While making the announcement about Saturday’s special Memorial Day weekend service, Jackvony said that “all military personnel can reserve their place on the honor wall” inside the pristine park.

“We’re encouraging people to purchase a 6-by-12-inch marble plaque for $150,” he explained. “This program is open to any service person from the six branches of our military, living or deceased, veteran or active.”

The program, however, excludes dishonorable discharges.

For more information or to order a plaque, please call Jackvony at 272-3460. There is no admission cost for Saturday’s service.
