McHale named Cox Softball Player of the Year

Johnston High School softball junior captain Jordan McHale was awarded the Cox Softball Player of the Year honor on Monday night.

The third baseman led the team batting at a .434 clip with nine extra-base hits (six triples) and 15 RBIs. After moving from shortstop to third this year, she turned in a fielding percentage of .890.

Nelson takes fifth in the discus throw

Johnston’s Kyle Nelson placed fifth in the discus throw at the RIIL Outdoor Track State Championships over the weekend, tossing a distance of 140.6 feet.

The distance was good enough to secure Nelson a spot in the New England Championships on Saturday in Saco, Maine.

Registration open for Tri-Town Summer Basketball League

Tri-Town Community Action Agency is hosting registration for its Summer Youth Basketball League at the Community Center, 33 Maple Ave., North Providence, beginning Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Games begin July 11.

Registration fee is $25, with scholarships available for those in need.
