Packed social calendar ahead for Manton Seniors

Dining and dance have always been an integral part of many Manton Seniors special events.

And according to Lorie DeVito, the independent senior citizen group’s longtime president, that trend isn’t about to change anytime soon. If anything, the Manton Seniors social scene is about to get really active in the next few month.

“We’ve got a number of exciting events scheduled for the next three months,” DeVito announced earlier this week. “We’ll even have our own election.”

But before the dinner, dancing, and raffle prizes that are also a highlight at the Manton Seniors special events at Twelve Acres Restaurant in Smithfield, there’s some important company business to discuss.

DeVito announced that will happen next Tuesday, Oct. 4, beginning at noon at the Johnston Senior Center, which has become the site for the Manton Seniors monthly meetings since changing venues from Our Lady of Grace Church on Greenville Avenue.

“The senior center is a perfect place for our monthly meetings,” DeVito said. “Our members can come early and enjoy the day’s lunch before we starting talking business at one o’clock.”

DeVito said next the day’s lunch menu will include orange juice, scrambled eggs, baked ham, homefries, and fruited yogurt. Those planning to attend the luncheon are asked to let DeVito know in advance so she can order the lunches.

The Oct. 4 meeting will include discussion about the Manton Seniors upcoming “super socials,” including the annual Halloween Party, Italian Gala, and Christmas Party.

DeVito said people should begin planning for the Halloween Party – which often features many of the group’s members coming dressed in unique costumes – that’s scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 23 at Twelve Acres beginning at noon.

The dinner selections are stuffed chicken or scrod, and tickets are priced at $25 per person. For reservations, call Rose Coppola at 401-943-9332.

While the nation’s Election Day is scheduled for Nov. 8, the Manton Seniors will hold an important monthly meeting on Nov. 1 at the senior center. Lunch will precede business at noon.

Then on Sunday, Nov. 20, the Manton Seniors will hold their annual Italian Gala, with veal parmesan or scrod on the menu and music from the Calamari Brothers trio of Jack Rubino, Vinny Lato, and Tony DelSignore.

Tickets will also be priced at $25 per person, and in keeping with tradition, the raffle will be held after dinner while many Manton Seniors will enjoy dancing.

DeVito also announced this week that the group’s annual election of officers is set for Tuesday, Dec. 8, during the monthly meeting at the senior center.

Then, as DeVito announced with a smile, “we’ll close out 2016 with our annual Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec. 16, also at Twelve Acres.”

She said dinner choices will be prime rib or baked stuffed shrimp. There will be music by the Calamari Brothers, and a mega-prize raffle will also highlight the day’s activity.

“And of course, we’re expecting Santa Claus to show up sometime after the dinner,” she said.
