Panthers win one, lose two at Hendricken quad meet

Posted

The Johnston wrestling team competed in a quad meet hosted by Bishop Hendricken on Friday night and went 1-2.

The Panthers got off to a good start, defeating Toll Gate in their first meet, 43-33. Against the Titans, Johnston got key individual victories from freshmen James Baccala and Elijah Burgess, while seniors Mike Caparco and Jesse Ribezzo each notched a win in their respective weight classes, as well. Sophomore Carson Kenny clinched the win, however, as he was able to hold off Toll Gate junior Eric Mechanic in the heavyweight match to secure the victory.

The Panthers weren’t so fortunate against Coventry and Hendricken, though, as the Oakers handed Johnston a 48-27 loss and the Hawks a lopsided 71-3 defeat.

After the win and a pair of losses, Johnston now sits in third place in Division I-B, with a league record of 5-6.

The Panthers are scheduled to compete in a tournament hosted by Methuen High School at 9:30 a.m. in Methuen, Mass. on Saturday morning.

Johnston’s next D-I dual meet will take place on Wednesday night, as the Panthers will host second-place North Providence at 7 p.m.

Boys’ basketball game against Moses Brown moved to Monday

Because of the snowstorm, the Johnston boys’ basketball team’s game at first-place Moses Brown that was scheduled for this past Monday, will now be played this coming Monday at 6:30 p.m.

The Panthers currently sit in second place in Division III-Central with a record of 6-3, a game and a half behind the Quakers, who own an 8-2 record.

Two of D-III’s top scorers will meet in that match-up.

Ryan Yankee has been on fire all season long for the Panthers, averaging 16.5 points per game – good for fifth in D-III.

Yankee will be opposed by Moses Brown’s Tom Chase, who is seventh in the state in scoring and third in D-III. The senior guard is averaging just south of 20 points per game at 19.7.

Before the Panthers play the Quakers, however, they’ll host 2-7 Ponaganset at 7 p.m. on Friday night. The Chieftains currently sit in last place in Division III-North.
