Pell Manor Tenants Association holds summer cookout

It’s a rite of summer that seems to get bigger, better, and hotter each year.

“We had 125 people sign up, and there may have been even more,” William “Bill” Santilli, president of the Claiborne Pell Manor Tenants Association, said last Friday afternoon at the Johnston apartment complex on Plainfield Pike. “People were everywhere, under the large canopy tent, inside the community room.”

While Santilli said it was the association’s annual summer cookout courtesy of the Johnston Housing Authority, he wanted it known that David aRusso “did another super job as our head chef.”

aRusso, who serves as director of the housing authority, was ably assisted by Domingo, Carlos, and Steve Caldwell, who kept the grilled hamburgers and hot dogs flowing for what Santilli said “may have been a record crowd for this annual cookout.”

The gathering featured the traditional 50/50 raffle, music, and as Santilli – who got a special visit from his brother, Town Councilman David Santilli – added, “all kinds of great food served to great people with an extra special dash of camaraderie and goodwill.”

Mayor Joseph Polisena, Police Chief Richard S. Tamburini, Deputy Chief Daniel O. Parrillo, and Maj. Joseph Razza were on hand, as were Councilman Santilli and his counterpart Richard DelFino III, who represents District I. Also present were state Reps. Deborah Fellela and Stephen Ucci, state Sen. Frank Lombardo, and School Committee member Robert LaFazia.

The event’s raffle featured a host of gift certificates to area restaurants, Stop & Shop, Walmart, and Walgreens.
