INDICTED

Two men charged with ambushing a pizza deliveryman last November will be arraigned in Superior Court on Friday. A Providence County Grand Jury returned the indictment this week asserting that Alec Perry and Joshua Carey conspired to rob the employee of a Providence pizza store. In a police report filed by Patrolman Derrick Palazzo at the time, the pizza man said the order, placed on Nov. 10, specified that the deliveryman have change for a $100, which should have aroused suspicions. Nevertheless, the pizza man made sure he had the cash before he arrived at 5 Joy St. He said a man met him at the front steps and said he didn’t have his wallet on him and a second man came from behind a parked mini-van and argued about who was going to pay before the other went inside the house and returned holding and aiming a rifle and said, “Give us the money and the pizzas now!”

Palazzo recognized the description of one of the subjects and began developing information for his whereabouts and that of a second suspect, also known to police. He said they were driving around that area looking for them on Nov. 16 in an unmarked car when one of the suspects recognized the car on Pontiac Avenue and they both fled. They were arrested at gunpoint after a foot chase through a field. Alec A. Perry, 18, of 343 Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, and Joshua Michael Carey, 22, of 19 Woodland Ave., Cranston, were charged with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Perry was additionally charged with using a firearm while committing a crime of violence. They both had histories of arrests and convictions for a number of offenses, including larceny, domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

PICKED UP

Patrolman Luca Lancellotti reported going to Providence on Feb. 3 to pick up a suspect detained by the police who was wanted in Johnston for larceny, attempted larceny and conspiracy. Detective Thomas Dwyer reported that the woman admitted to entering vehicles in the parking lot at the Walgreens at Plainfield Street and Atwood Avenue on Jan. 8 and stole a bag containing personal papers and an iPad.

Officer Matthew Winsor took the initial report and said he got surveillance video from Walgreens that he forwarded to detectives, and an image of the suspect was posted to the Rhode Island’s Most Wanted website. Dwyer said she also admitted going into another unlocked vehicle in the parking lot that had “nothing in it.” He said she also confessed to pawning the iPad at Fall River Pawn Brokers on Westminster Street in Providence for $100. Dwyer said he contacted the pawnshop and they claimed they had no record of her pawning anything from Samone L. McCarthy, 30, of 144 Parade St., Providence. McCarthy was transported to district court for arraignment.

DEAD END

Patrolman Michael Protano reported he was dispatched to Becker Avenue for a disturbance around 11:15 p.m. Feb. 8. He said he stopped the car involved and recognized Jamichael L. Mitchell, 22, of 360 Mineral Spring Ave., Pawtucket, from a prior domestic incident at the same residence and knew that there were two no contact orders out for him and a resident of the house on Becker Avenue. He said he asked Mitchell why he was there and he said he “just happened to be in the area” and was confronted by the brother of the woman he was not supposed to contact, but that nothing physical occurred between them. He said the other subject of the order, who is the mother of Mitchell’s child, said Mitchell did nothing wrong and refused to cooperate but did admit they “talked” to each other. Other residents, including the child’s grandmother, told police he was there to “cause trouble.” Protano said that Becker Avenue is a dead-end street and it wasn’t logical that he just happened to be there. Mitchell was arrested and charged with felony violation of court because of two prior convictions for domestic violence. Protano noted that Mitchell has an extensive BCI record in Delaware and Rhode Island.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Patrolman Derrick Palazzo responded to an accident at 163 Central Ave. around 7:40 p.m. on Feb. 9. He said he found a car in the driveway with heavy front-end damage and a second car parked in the street that it apparently hit. He said the driver was outside the car and appeared to be unsteady on his feet but said he was uninjured by the accident. He said the man smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. He said the driver consented to a field sobriety test but then told Palazzo he couldn’t do it and Palazzo stopped it for safety reasons. Glen R. Murphy, 44, of 772 Woonsocket Hill Road, North Smithfield, was charged with DUI and refusal after he declined a breath test at headquarters. He was also charged with leaving the lane of travel and driving on the wrong side of the road.
