AT GUN POINT

A Johnston man was arrested at gunpoint on July 11 after Patrolman Derrick Palazzo spotted the car the suspect was driving on Killingly Street around 10:25 p.m. The man was wanted in connection with a domestic vandalism incident on Clinton Street moments earlier.

Palazzo was told to look out for an older Nissan Maxima with purple headlamps and no registration plates. He said he saw the car and the damage to the front end consistent with the damage done to an above ground pool on Clinton Street, which the driver was accused of crashing into. He said he did a U-turn and was about to perform a traffic stop when the car accelerated, went into the opposite lane and started passing cars on the left to evade Palazzo. He said he pursued the car, which he estimated to be doing 55 mph in a 25 mph zone, until it came to a stop at the intersection of Waterman Avenue and Clifton Street.

Palazzo said he exited his cruiser and approached the car with his weapon drawn and told the driver to show his hands. He said another officer arrived and the driver was ordered to get out of the car and lay face down, which he did.

Vinicio Medina, 22, of 26 Clinton St., was taken into custody without further incident.

Patrolman Arthur Petteruti and other officers had been dispatched to Medina’s mother’s residence earlier after he had a verbal argument over the phone with his girlfriend and jumped into the unregistered car to drive away. When he saw the Nissan was blocked in by a car parked behind it, he allegedly drove forward and smashed into an above ground pool, and then reversed the car around the other car and took off down the street. Petteruti said everyone at the Clinton Street address was uncooperative and refused to provide statements to police.

Nevertheless, Medina was wanted under the 24-hour rule for domestic vandalism and domestic disorderly conduct. Petteruti said he cancelled an intercity attempt to locate call after he heard of Medina’s arrest.

Medina was charged with domestic vandalism, domestic disorderly and reckless driving and eluding police in an unregistered vehicle. He was later released on $5,000 personal recognizance and told to have no contact with his mother.

WARRANTED

Patrolman Ryan Lemieux reports a call about a domestic disturbance at 21 Zanfagna St. around 4 p.m. on July 13. He said he spoke with a woman there, who told him she had a strictly verbal argument with her ex-boyfriend, who had already left the scene. He said he heard from dispatch that the person who leased the apartment, 43-year-old Shante Garlington, had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in District Court for a driving on a suspended license charge. Garlington was arrested and taken to headquarters, were she was held for arraignment.

TINTED AND TAINTED

Patrolman Adam Catamero reports he was on patrol around 5:20 p.m. on July 11 when he saw an orange Nissan 350Z with dark tinted windows and a temporary registration plate that did not display an expiration date.

Catamero said he pulled the car over on Route 6 near Killingly Street and spoke with the driver. He said the driver had a receipt for the temporary plate from February of this year, but a check revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and there was a warrant for failure to appear for a payment review hearing in District Court.

Mohamed Adlan, 21, of 151 Federal Way in Johnston, was charged with driving an unregistered car with illegal sunscreen material on a suspended license. Adlan was later released after paying the bail on warrant and then released on $1,000 personal recognizance for the suspended license charge.
