Pro-guns is not a pro-business strategy

To the Editor:

Pro-business or pro-guns, which is more important for Rhode Island?

This question is at issue this week with a number of bills scheduled for hearings before the Judiciary Committee. Two House bills have a direct relationship to this question: Do we need a pro-business climate of a pro-gun climate in Rhode Island? I think we all know what will benefit all of Rhode Islanders more.

House bills 5861 and HB 5655 and restricting the number rounds per magazine are pro-business. Think about it. If you are a progressive company thinking of relocating what do you look for? You look for a favorable tax structure, State and local governments that are fair, respected and ethical and you want a quality of living that is most of all safe for you and the families you will ask to relocate to Rhode Island.

Guns in our schools do not make our schools safer nor do they make the majority of families thinking of moving into the state feel safer.  Just the idea of sending your children to schools where adults can carry concealed weapons is frightening.

If we want Rhode Island to become a place where businesses and families desire to relocate we need to make it financially reasonable and most of all we need people to be feel and be safe. Pro-guns is not a pro-business strategy – in fact it could be a pro-business killer. HB5861 and HB5655 are pro-business.

Take care, give care and be present.
