SUV chase moves through town, ends with arrest of 6

A Monday vehicle chase that began in Scituate, moved through Johnston and ended in North Providence led to the arrest of six people and the discovery of several pounds of marijuana and a pistol, according to Rhode Island State Police.

The episode began shortly after 11:30 a.m., when Scituate police began pursuing a Kia SUV on Route 14 in that community in connection with an alleged breaking an entering incident.

According to state police, the pursuit moved into Johnston, and the vehicle in question entered Route 295 north. Scituate and Johnston police followed the vehicle onto Route 44 east, and state police began involved as the vehicle entered an area of heavy traffic on Smith Street.

The operator of the vehicle, described as a juvenile female, is said to have sideswiped three parked vehicles on Smith Street in the area of Mineral Spring Avenue before rear-ending a Toyota pickup truck, which was then pushed into a RIPTA bus. One person was hospitalized with minor injuries as a result of the collision.

The operator of the Kia continued on until colliding with a stone wall at the corner of Smith Street and Fruit Hill Avenue, police said. All six occupants of the vehicle then fled the scene on foot, and were each apprehended shortly thereafter without incident.

A subsequent investigation resulted in the discovery of 6.3 pounds of marijuana and a loaded Bryco Arms 59, 9mm pistol, police said.

The juvenile female was charged with eluding, reckless driving, driving to endanger, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, operating without a license, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and obstructing a police officer. She was held overnight at the Training School.

Jakial Smith, 20, of 61 March St. in Providence, was charged with possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and obstructing a police officer.

Trey D. Pinkerton, 19, of 47 Zone St. in Providence; Travone J. Green, 19, of 293 Vermont Ave. in Providence; Richard S. Loboi, 20, of 60 Prairie Ave. in Providence; and Isaiah D. Edwards, 20, of 80 Curtis St. in Providence, were all charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and obstruction of a police officer.

The five men were held overnight at state police headquarters pending arraignment. Additional charges from Scituate are pending in connection with the breaking and entering, according to police.
