Spring lesson hatches at Pumpkin Patch

Posted

If it’s spring, that means that baby chicks are hatching in Cheryl Martin’s Grey Elephants classroom at Pumpkin Patch Academy.

After incubating for 21 days, two types of baby chicks hatched –Dominiques and Rhode Island Reds. The eggs came from Casey Farm in South Kingstown and were returned there as baby chicks after spending about two weeks in the classroom.

According to Martin, this year’s chicks were particularly daring and escaped from the confines of their cage multiple times, exploring the classroom and venturing out into the hallways, keeping everyone on their toes at all times.

While the chicks were housed at Pumpkin Patch, the students were immersed in learning about them, from reading and writing to tracking hatch dates and naming each one of them.

The chicks were returned to Casey Farm on May 13. 1
