Students honored with High School Hero Challenge award

Posted

The Certificate of Accomplishment was signed by U.S. Senator Jack Reed and dated Sept. 24, 2015.

The recipient was Johnston High School, honored for earning first place in the Rhode Island Blood Center’s 2014-15 High School Hero Challenge in the Seniors Category for 101 to 200 students.

Perhaps equally as impressive is that Johnston High received a special plaque from the Providence-based blood center.

A group of students showed off the two awards Tuesday morning inside the Edward L. DiSimone Gymnasium during a six-hour blood drive that drew even non-students to Cherry Hill to give blood.

Ironically, the Johnston High senior who was supposed to receive the award was giving blood during Tuesday’s drive, so seven other proud Panthers gathered near the table where Ibrahim Abaherah was lying to give blood and gave a “thumbs up” for a picture.

Other students who participated in the award showcase were Zach Szumita, Mike Mardo, Lauren Arango, Tyler Nasisi, Ed Gallucci, Allie Faella, and Gian Paola.

BATTLE OF

THE CLASSES

Johnston High School’s state-of-the-art athletic complex will be overflowing with all types of spirited students next Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, for the Panthers’ annual Battle of the Classes.

The event is a unique face-off of all four classes at the school, and will feature a series of 14 events beginning at 6 p.m. The rain date is Oct. 7, and admission will be $5 at the gate.

“We encourage the students to buy their tickets in school because they are only $3 and count towards the 14th event, the most spirited class,” said Chelsea Harrison of the Student council. “Battle of the Classes is also a way our school kicks off the homecoming activities to get everyone in the spirit of this time of year.”
