Summer fun: JCCA ready for outdoor movie nights, concerts

The Johnston Community Center Association (JCCA) is expanding its horizons.

“We’re excited about our 2016 summer schedule,” said Glenn Carroll, the non-profit’s president. “We’ll again present three outdoor music concerts, but we’re adding what we think will be an event all Johnstonians will really enjoy.”

That event is the first in a series of free outdoor movies to be shown inside Johnston War Memorial Park on Saturday. Showtime is 8 p.m., and those attending are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers with non-alcoholic beverages. JCCA will provide popcorn free of charge.

Carroll explained that the JCCA, which sponsors such events as the annual Holiday Festival and Memorial Day Salute to Veterans, recently purchased a large inflatable screen that will be erected at the park’s bandstand on movie nights.

“We did some online shopping and made the purchase from a company that [JCCA vice president] Mark Gilmore found advertised on Amazon,” Carroll said. “Each and every one of our loyal members is looking forward to Saturday night and another unique JCCA first.”

Perhaps no one is as excited as Nicole Carroll, the JCCA president’s daughter and a teacher at the town’s Early Childhood Center.

“We can’t take any credit for the upcoming Movies in the Park,” Carroll said. “Nicole is actually the person who came up with the idea. All we did was explore the possibility and then decided to give it a go.”

Saturday night’s movie will be “Zootopia,” and Carroll said the remaining selections will be based on people’s suggestions. The other dates will be July 30, Aug. 13, and Aug. 27, with each dependent upon weather.

The Concerts in the Park series begins Friday, July 29, with Jimmy Mazz. On Aug. 7, the Jesse Liam four-piece band will play, followed by the music of Joshua David on Aug. 21. All of the performances are free.
