Dancing with

the Stars

On April 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., join Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership for its ninth annual Dancing with the Stars of Mentoring. Eight local “celebrity” dancers and their professional partners from The Dancin’ Feelin’ studio will take part in a ballroom dance competition to raise funds for youth mentoring in Rhode Island. In addition to the competition, there will be dinner, a silent auction, open dancing, and a fabulous opening number featuring NBC 10’s Mario Hilario and the Total Convergence Dancers. Easter cookie sale

St. Brigid’s Church, located at 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will be selling homemade cookies on Palm Sunday weekend, March 28 and 29, before and after all Masses. Saturday’s Mass is at 5 p.m. and Sunday’s Masses are at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. One-pound trays at $13, while 1-1/2 pound trays are $18. Trays can be reserved by calling 401-944-3645 or 401-944-3945.

People in the

Neighborhood

The Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library’s “People in the Neighborhood” series for grades K and up continues on Friday, March 27 at 4:30 p.m. Firefighter Rob from the Johnston Fire Department will talk about his career, discuss fire safety and answer questions. Registration is required for those who have not previously signed up. Stop at the children’s desk or call 401-231-4980, ext. 5.

Academic News & Notes

Fairfield University has announced that the following local residents have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2014 semester. Congratulations to the following students from Johnston: Christian Kabbas, Maddi Gervasio, Danielle Renzi and Monica Sciacca.

Rhode Island College is pleased to announce that on March 5, the following Johnston residents were inducted into The 3.5 Society, the college’s honor society for freshmen. Full-time freshmen must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in their first semester to qualify. Congratulations to Zachary DeSimone, Stephanie Lemoi, Michael Marocco, Allyson Pavone, Hayley Pereira, Jared Podmaska, Brandon Woolley and Cory Woolley.

RI Pink Heals

Annual Ball

The RI Pink Heals, which is comprised of both male and female members of local fire and police departments in support of women with cancer, will hold their fourth annual Pink Heals Ball on May 1 at the Crowne Plaza Grand Ballroom in Warwick.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. with a selection of one of the following: boneless chicken, baked scrod, prime rib or vegetarian. Dress code is formal/semi-formal with men in Class A uniform or suit and women in gowns or similar.

The cost is $50 per person ($500 per table) with open seating unless a full table is purchased (tables of 10).

Music will be provided by DJ Eric Anthony of Sounds Spectacular DJ Service. All proceeds benefit the women and families of Rhode Island who are battling cancer.

Center Food Drive

The annual Food Drive/Feinstein Challenge has already begun at the Johnston Senior Center. They are collecting non-perishable food and gift card donations from March 1 to April 30. Every year, the Feinstein Foundation donates to the center based on the total amount of food collected. This donation from Feinstein enables the center to help even more people in need. There is a collection container inside the main entrance. Gift cards to stores like Price Rite are also appreciated, as they allow recipients to purchase milk, eggs and other perishable items.

The Johnston Senior Center is located at 1291 Hartford Ave. For more information, call 401-944-3343. Food donations may be brought to the center during regular business hours or during Friday night bingo.

Friends of the Mohr

Public Library

Members of the Friends of the Mohr Library plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow the library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to provide support either through donations, membership dues or volunteering their time. There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children and young adults. Most prices range from 25 cents to $2. The Friends are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated, and can be left at the library’s main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.

Science Club

On April 6, join in with others at the Mohr Library in Johnston and explore chemical-to-electrical energy by building a potato battery. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Please register by calling the library at 401-231-4980, ext. 5. The program is geared toward grades three to five.
