For Mother’s Day at Ocean State Sandwich Company

Treat the special women in your life to decadent desserts while also helping fight breast cancer during the second annual Rhode Island Bakes for Breast Cancer from Mother’s Day on May 10 through May 16. Restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries, cafés, chocolate and ice cream shops throughout the Ocean State will participate, including Ocean State Sandwich Company located at 1345 Hartford Ave.

Establishments will designate all sales of one specific dessert to support breast cancer care and research. Proceeds will be shared by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Bakes for Breast Cancer, Inc., a non-profit breast cancer organization dedicated to making a difference.

Night of the Rising Stars

The North Central Chamber of Commerce looks forward to you joining them for a wonderful evening at May 19’s “Night of the Rising Stars.”

The evening with begin with a fabulous Cocktail & Networking Hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The featured guest speaker is Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea. 

The “Stars” will come out following the guest speaker – Rising Star, Community Service, Ambassador and Small Business of the Year! Student scholarships will also be awarded. Dinner tickets are $50 per person, with a selection of beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian.

Gentian Garden

Club meeting

On May 9, the Gentian Garden Club is having a plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon at the North Scituate Community House on Route 116 in historic North Scituate. The plant sale features a wide variety of perennials, wildflowers and herbs that are from member’s gardens. It is an excellent opportunity to find plants at reasonable prices to enhance your garden. Community ‘Y-ART’ Sale

Drawing inspiration from the community yard sale, The Artists’ Exchange, a non-profit arts collaborative on Rolfe Square in Cranston, proudly presents the Springtime Community “Y-ART Sale.” The event will be held on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Part yard sale, part community arts event, the Y-ART Sale will feature a wide range of artisan vendors, yard sale vendors, a gallery showcase of paintings, pottery, and items made from reclaimed and repurposed objects, and hand crafted and one-of-a-kind items.

At the Mohr

Handcrafted Teatime Stationary with Carolyn Leone will be held on May 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, located at 1 Memorial Ave. in Johnston. Join Carolyn for a special paper artistry class creating teatime stationary, including cards, gift cardholders and more. On May 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., join in for an “A Victorian Afternoon,” during which actress Pat Perry will perform “The Jewelry Box,” a presentation on jewelry for men and women of the Victorian Age. This program is geared for adults and children aged 10 and up. Registration is required.

Golf tournament to benefit cancer awareness, research

On June 14, there will be golf tournament to honor Nancy Strong, who was diagnosed with stage four inflammatory breast cancer last April. She continuous to fight every day, with the help of help of Dr. Overmoyer and the terrific people within the Dana Farber organization.

The golf tournament will help raise funds for both Dana Faber and the Jimmy Fund. It will be held at the Cranston Country Club, and tee sponsors are being sought as well as donations for gift bags.

Tee time is 1:30 p.m., and fees are $120 per player. That cost includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner and a Nancy Strong gift pack for all participants. Tickets for the dinner are only $35 per person.

Defenders of Animals

Defenders of Animals is holding its annual May Breakfast on May 17 at 10 a.m. at the Governor Sprague Mansion, located at 1351 Cranston St. in Cranston.

Ladies & Lipstick event

The North Central Chamber of Commerce will present “Health, Wellness & Connections” on May 12 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital’s Executive Dining Area, located at 200 High Service Ave. in North Providence.

Ladies, get-up-to-date information on women’s health topics and enjoy an opportunity to network. This event will offer open networking, a great, healthy breakfast, three fabulous speakers discussing health issues that affect women, and of course, networking.

Goodwill Night at McCoy

The Pawtucket Red Sox will host a Goodwill Rhode Island Night at McCoy Stadium on Monday, June 8, as the team takes on the Charlotte Knights starting at 7:05 p.m. General admission tickets are $9, and a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will be donated to Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island. Goodwill Grand Raffle

Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island is bringing back its annual Grand Raffle. The drawing will be held June 15 at the organization’s offices, but those buying tickets do not have to be present to win. The cost of one ticket is $10, while two tickets will cost $15 and three tickets will cost $25. Only 700 tickets will be sold. The top prize is $1,000 cash, or seven days and six nights in Orlando, Fla. The second prize is $500 cash, and the third prize is a laptop computer. Tickets can be purchased by cash, check or money order, and can be obtained by calling Jan Young or Jeff Machado at 401-861-2080.

Congressional

internships available

U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI) is accepting applications for interns in his Rhode Island office for summer 2015. This unpaid program is open to civic-minded college students who are available for at least 10 hours per week. A qualified candidate will be well organized, responsible and dependable, and have strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities include answering phone calls, drafting constituent correspondence and supporting staff members on various projects. College credit is available, if approved by the institution.

‘Antiques Roadshow’

appraiser coming to Cranston Library

Cranston Public Library will welcome Kenneth Gloss, proprietor of the internationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston, to give a free talk on the value of old and rare books on May 13 at 6 p.m. Gloss, a frequent guest appraiser on PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” will discuss and display some of his favorite antique finds, review the past of his historic bookstore, describe the joy of the “hunt,” and explain the factors that contribute to a book’s value. Gloss will share anecdotes from his experience, as well as present tips and guidelines for starting one’s own book collection.

A Q&A session will end the presentation, after which Gloss will provide free verbal appraisals of books brought by attendees. Gloss is a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, the New England Antiquarian Booksellers of America, the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Antiquarian Booksellers Association, the Committee for the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair and the Boston Society.

Attendees do not need to register, and Gloss will get through as many books as time allows. Anyone leftover will be invited up to his store for a free appraisal.
