coming to the Mohr

Join the Mohr Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on June 8 for “Reel Baseball: Essays and Interviews on the National Pastime, Hollywood, and American Culture.” Author Stephen C. Wood will discuss the use baseball in films as a backdrop to explore larger social and cultural issues, the tension of good versus evil, and the quest for spiritual fulfillment. Johnston Historical

Society general meeting

This month’s general meeting of the Johnston Historical Society will include speaker Jim Ignasher, vice president of the Historical Society of Smithfield, who will tell lost tales of Rhode Island and New England. Ignasher is the author of “Forgotten Tales of Rhode Island,” “Remembering Smithfield: Sketches of Apple Valley” and “Rhode Island Disasters: Tales of Tragedy by Air, Sea and Rail.” The meeting will be held on May 27 at 7 p.m. at the Johnston Historical Society, located at 101 Putnam Pike in Johnston. Hope for the Homeless

Motorcycle Run

On June 13, Hope for the Homeless will hold a Motorcycle Run at 9 a.m. leaving from Suzy Q’s Place, 208 Plainfield Pike Road in North Scituate.

Registration is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with kickstands up at 11 a.m. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a bike run T-shirt, food, music, raffles and more! The cost is $15 per person for pre-registration before June 7. The run starts and ends at Suzy Q’s Ice Cream. All proceeds will be used to purchase backpacks and items to fill backpacks for the homeless. Backpacks are distributed in November by the Rhode Island Dream Center on the State House lawn. Sponsors are currently being sought, and vendors are wanted at a cost of $30 for a 10-by-10 space and $50 for a 10-by-20 space. T-shirt sponsors are also being sought, for a $50 donation.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Brigid’s Church, located at 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will be sponsoring its quarterly Mass of Anointing on June 6 at 11 a.m.

Handmade shawls, made by the ministry and blessed by Father Robert Rochon, will be available, upon request, for anyone that may need one for themselves or for someone they know who could benefit by having one. Those who are elderly, preparing for surgery, suffering from a chronic illness or experiencing spiritual or emotional pain are welcome to come and join in.

Dinner & A Show

The Johnston Senor Center will hold its annual fundraiser, “Saturday Nite Dinner & A Show,” on May 30, with dinner at 6 p.m. and show at 7:30 p.m. The evening is sponsored by Starzz Entertainment and D. Palmieri Bakery. There will be a pasta and meatball dinner with complimentary wine served, along with a rock and roll show and dancing. Tickets are $25 per person. Comedy Night

The Johnston Public Recreation Department will hold a Comedy Night fundraiser on June 6 in the Johnston High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The event is being headlined by comedian Mike Murray of Funny 4 Funds and will include two special guest comics. Proceeds will benefit field improvements and are available for $20 per person. A 50/50 raffle will also be held. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call 401-272-3460.

St. Brigid’s

100th anniversary

St. Brigid’s Church, located at 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, is extending an invitation to all former and current parishioners to help celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary. The committee would like those interested to share memories, which can be mailed to the rectory or emailed to loubill47@cox.net.

On June 14, an outside Mass will be held at Goddard Park followed by a cookout, fun and games. On Sept. 20, an Anniversary Mass will be held at 10 a.m., followed by a luncheon at the Cranston Country Club at noon.

Academic News & Notes

Congratulations to Anastasia Procaccini of Johnston, who graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in environmental sciences from the Rubenstein School of Environment & Natural Resources during commencement ceremonies on May 17 at the University of Vermont.

Bryant University held its 152nd commencement on May 16. The following Johnston students were among the graduates: Stephen Almagno (bachelor of science in business administration in accounting), Emily Grenier (bachelor of science in international business in marketing), Nicholas Loffredo (bachelor of science in business administration in accounting, cum laude), Helena Miech (bachelor of science in business administration in entrepreneurship), Rianna Rampone (bachelor of science in business administration in accounting), Evan Smith (bachelor of arts in global studies), Xuhao Zheng (bachelor of science in business administration in finance), and Mengting Zhu (bachelor of science in business administration in marketing, cum laude).

Tiana D’acchioli of Johnston has accepted an Odum Scholarship valued at $1,500 per year to attend Valdosta State University during the 2015-16 academic year. This award is renewable.

The following Johnston residents have achieved dean’s list honors for the spring 2015 semester at Lasell College in Newton, Mass. Congratulations to Lindsey Haskins, who is a member of the class of 2016 majoring in hospitality and event management, and Kayla Hammersley, who is a member of the class of 2018 majoring in environmental studies.

Giant yard sale

Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 251 Danielson Pike in North Scituate, will host a giant yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

GloriDays

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation is sponsoring GloriDays from June 5-7 in Bristol. It’s a 44-mile walk throughout the East Bay, during which folks will walk during the day and sleep in pink tents at night. The event has a minimum fundraising commitment of $1,500 person person. All proceeds go to support the foundation’s future Survivorship and Wellness Center.

Over the past decade, the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation has provided education, support, and an array of holistic programs and resources to tens of thousands of individuals. For more information, call 401-861-4376.
