St. Rocco Feast and Festival

St. Rocco Church on Atwood Avenue will hosts its annual Feast and Festival from Thursday, Aug. 18 to Sunday, Aug. 21. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The event will feature a range of food, a beer garden, rides, games, and music, as well as a raffle drawing with a 2016 Lincoln MKZ as the top prize. Second prize is $1,500, and third prize is $1,000. There will be a fireworks display on Saturday evening, and a bocce tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Rev. Angelo Carusi serves as honorary chairman, with John L. Ricci and Richard Montella serving as co-chairmen, and a host of volunteers contributing.

A Triddum to Saint Rocco will take place Aug. 15-17 at 7 p.m. at the church. A solemn mass with the parish choir will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21. The traditional religious procession with the statue of Saint Rocco will take place following the mass.

Save the date for Apple Festival

The Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and Washington Trust present the 29th annual Apple Festival, to be held on Sept. 17-18. Come and enjoy this time-honored tradition in the town of Johnston, featuring family fun, food, music, and shopping. Admission is free.

The Apple Festival draws more than 5,000 people over the weekend and fills Johnston Memorial Park with music, laughter, and the scent of apple pies and great food. Organizers are calling all artists, vendors, and entertainers, as this is an opportunity to showcase your business. There is also a pie-baking contest. St. Brigid’s Anointing of the Sick

St. Brigid's Church, 1231 Plainfield St., Johnston, Nurses and Prayer Shawl Ministry will be sponsoring their quarterly Mass of Anointing on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m.

Handmade shawls, made by the ministry, and blessed by Father Robert Rochon, pastor, will be available for anyone that may need one for themselves or for someone they know who could benefit by having one. Those who are elderly, preparing for surgery, suffering from a chronic illness or experiencing spiritual or emotional pain are welcome to come and join us in our healing prayers that contribute to our well being.

Golden Crest summer concert series

Golden Crest Nursing Centre is sponsoring a summer concert series held on the outdoor patio of North Providence Union Free Library, located at 1810 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence. The first concert was scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 17, with Robert Black, New England’s tribute artist. Enjoy music and dancing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Concerts are free and open to the public. Bring your own lawn chairs. Non-alcoholic beverages are allowed. There is plenty of free adjacent parking at North Providence High School. The second concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The “Fabulous” Tony Cerbo, will be performing. There is no rain date. Hot Dog and Beer Festival

The Dillon Council Knights of Columbus, located at 1675 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence, is hosting a Hot Dog and Beer Festival on Friday, Aug. 19, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and are available after Mass or at the parish office, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Holy Family Home will receive 50 percent of the funds raised. Please consider purchasing a ticket. Tri-Town seeks volunteers

Tri-Town Community Center needs volunteers to help with its food distribution program. Hours are the first three Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tri-Town is also looking for people to help relocate the food program to Emanuel Avenue at a date and time to be determined. Background checks are required. Tri-Town will cover the costs for the background checks, and the Health Center is available to conduct physical exams to ensure the fitness of volunteers.

Wine & Dine Extravaganza

On Aug. 27, the MS Dream Center and Accessible RI will hold a Wine & Dine Extravaganza from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.

The event will include entertainment, raffles, a silent auction, and a mystery wine and dine pairing. Tickets are $60 each or 10 for $500, and are tax deductible. To purchase tickets, contact Anne Delsignore at anne@msdreamcenter.org or 401-330-7470.

The MS Dream Center was founded in April 2010 with a mission of engaging all members of the MS community in purposeful activity, while promoting a spirit of camaraderie. Cruizin’ for a Cause

Every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cruizin’ for a Cause is held at the Denny’s located at 1448 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. Coming up in July, all proceeds benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. There is a $5 donation for each vehicle, and trophies will be awarded. Registration now open for Cranston Senior Games

The Cranston Senior Games will be held on Sept. 17 at Cranston High School West beginning at 9 a.m. Everyone 55 years or older is invited to participate. Academic News & Notes

Students who earned degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute include Robert Parker of Johnston who earned a bachelor’s in games and simulation arts and sciences. Victoria Shakespeare of Johnston earned a bachelor’s in electronic media, arts, and communication.

The following Johnston residents have been named to the dean’s list at the University of New Hampshire for the spring semester of the 2015-16 academic year. Congratulations to Jessica DelGreco and Brittany Mezzancella, who earned highest honors.

Computer classes at the Mohr

The Mohr Library in Johnston is a sponsoring site of the Northstar Basic Computer Skills Certificate program. Make an appointment to take a Northstar assessment. Free family movies at Mulligan’s Island

Mulligan’s Island is pleased to announce its family movie series lineup for 2016. Outdoor movies are a refreshing, fun way to spend a summer evening.

The movies will be shown on a big screen at the Mulligan’s Island Event Center, located at 1000 New London Ave. in Cranston.

The center opens one hour prior to show time. Seating is first come, first served. Lawn chairs and blankets are allowed. Please no umbrellas, tents, coolers, food, or drinks. Concessions will be available.

The movie line-up is as follows: “Inside Out” on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7:15 p.m.; “Frozen” on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.; “Zootopia” on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.; and a surprise movie event on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6:15 p.m.

All movie titles, movie night contests, dates, and times are subject to change and are weather dependent.

Friends of the Mohr Public Library

Members of the Friends plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow Mohr Library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues, or through volunteering their time. There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and young adults. Most prices range from 25 cents to $2. The Friends are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated, and can be left at the library’s main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.

Coloring for Grownups

Every Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mohr Library, you may enjoy a therapeutic, relaxing and enjoyable evening through adult coloring. Many choices of designs including stylized drawings, florals, mandalas along with 100 beautiful markers and 100 colored pencils to choose from. Come early or late: the program is free Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library is located at 1 Memorial Ave, Johnston.

Genealogy Group

The Mohr Library Genealogy Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. Mohr Library has yearly subscriptions to Ancestry and also New England Historical Genealogical Society databases (NEHGS) on all library computers. Mohr Library also publishes a monthly newsletter outlining upcoming program details and includes tips for searching. Former programs include field trips to the State Archive and Swan Point Cemetery, as well as speakers on cemeteries, medallions found on gravestones, how to search for a particular nationality, and much more.

Host families needed

Consider hosting an international exchange student through AFSUSA. Each year, more than 2,300 students from 90 countries come to the U.S. to study in our high schools and live with host families. By hosting an AFS exchange student, you will begin to see the world differently. Profiles of available students who have been selected to come to our area are available by visiting afsusa.org/host-family/our-students. Maybe you would like to learn more about culture in Thailand, or want to open your home to a student from Portugal. Please take a few minutes to look at the student profiles. Any family interested in opening their homes to a study abroad student for the 2016-17 school year should contact JoAnne Hanrahan at jhanrahan@afsusa.org. Students will arrive for the school year on Sept. 8.
