Police Explorer Post 405 fundraiser

Join in with members of the Johnston Police Explorer Post 405 at Kelley Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, located at 1418 Plainfield Pike in Cranston, for a fundraising dinner on Oct. 2 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The price is $10 per person, and children under the age of 10 are admitted free of charge. Enjoy a family-style dinner and raffles.

Adopt-A-Pup

Scrub-A-Pup Self-Serve Dog Wash, located at 2244 Plainfield Pike in Cranston, will present an Adopt-A-Pup event on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event will feature some of New England’s most deserving adoptable pets, with the Friends of Homeless Animals RI (fohari.org) on hand along with special guest host Jess from 92 PRO-FM. The event is being sponsored by Moriarty’s Fence Company. Free nail trims will be offered for pets. Along with the adoption component, there will be food trucks, a bounce house, face painting, and raffle prizes from sponsors including Moriarty’s Invisible Fence, John Paul Pet, Paul Mitchell the School RI, Caffe Dolce Vita, Hotel Dolce Villa, Biergarten, Blend PVD, and more. The Cranston and Warwick police K-9 units will also be on hand to do a search and rescue demonstration from noon to 2 p.m.

St. Brigid’s 20 Week Club

The Committee of the 20 Week Club at St. Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will begin selling tickets prior and after the Saturday 5 p.m. Mass. and Sundays at their 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses beginning on the weekend of October first, and ending Nov. 6 when the first drawing will take place. There will be 30 weekly drawings and eight grand prizes, along with a luncheon on April 30 for members in good standing at the Alpine Country Club. Turkey Supper

Trinity Episcopal Church, 251 Danielson Pike in North Scituate, will be holding its 37th annual Turkey Supper on Sunday, Oct. 9, between 3p.m. and 7 p.m. This traditional homemade turkey dinner includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, butternut squash, cranberry sauce, rolls, coffee/fruit punch, and home baked pies. There are also takeout dinners available. Tickets are $14 for adults and $8 for children ages six to 10. Children five and under are admitted free. Tickets are available at the door or in advance by calling 401-647-2322. Parking is free, and all are welcome. Visit us before or after the Scituate Art Festival.

Paying for college

A program titled “Plan and Pay for College Without Going Crazy or Broke” will be presented by Bill Geasey from New York Life Insurance Company at the Mohr Library on Oct. 6 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This is a free seminar for parents of children ages eight to 18. You cannot afford to miss this.

Tiger’s Den needs your help

Tiger’s Den Animal Rescue is a Rhode Island-based, non-profit, no-kill, 100-percent volunteer organization that assists families and their pets with fundraising for veterinary bills and providing pet food. In addition to its family-based program, the organization maintains the largest cat sanctuary in Rhode Island.

Tiger’s Den requires additional funding for its cat sanctuary. The goal is to make director Melissa Davis’ dream a reality – to allow Tiger’s Den to provide the animals under her care a second chance at life.

Volunteers needed at Tri-Town

Tri-Town Community Center needs volunteers to help with its food distribution program. Hours are the first three Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tri-Town is also looking for people to help relocate the food program to Emanuel Avenue at a date and time to be determined.

Background checks are required. Tri-Town will cover the costs for the background checks, and the Health Center is available to conduct physical exams to ensure the fitness of volunteers.

Historical Society afternoon outing

On Oct. 1, discover “Boundaries and Blacksmithing” in town with the Johnston Historical Society from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Andrew Harris House, 216 Morgan Ave.

Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Johnston Historical Society invite community members to a very special afternoon outing. Neutaconkanut Hill was the original boundary of the Providence settlement led by Roger Williams. But did you know that just a few short years later the hill was included within the settlement when a new boundary was set at Hipses Rock in Johnston?

Join the conservancy for a rare opportunity to visit this little known landmark, which is on private property. A visit to the newly restored blacksmith shop will be another highlight of the afternoon, which will conclude with refreshments at the house. The event is free of charge, with a rain date of Oct. 2. Computer classes at Mohr Library

Starting in September, the Mohr Library is offering drop-in Friday computer classes from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Stop into the library for computer and technology help. Learn how to use email, Microsoft Word, and Facebook, format resumes, download free ebooks, and more.

No appointments are necessary. Do you possess basic computer skills and want to add a computer certification to your resume? The Mohr Library is a certified NorthStar Computer Assessment site. Take and pass an online test and earn a printed certificate. Appointments are required for NorthStar.

Brass Attack outdoor concert

The Autumn Open House at The Village at Waterman Lake is from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, featuring an outdoor concert by Brass Attack, Southern New England’s finest live nine-piece dance band.

Educational Boot Camp for Seniors

The American Diabetes Association, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of RI, and CVS Health are pleased to announce the next Diabetes Educational Boot Camp for Seniors on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cranston Senior Center, 1070 Cranston St. in Cranston. This free, half-day event is designed to help senior citizens learn more about diabetes self-management while offering free health screenings. The event is open to all seniors living with diabetes, prediabetes, or those wishing to learn more about diabetes self-management, and the day will also include a free lunch and giveaways. Pre-registration is required to ensure enough supplies and seating.
