J & D Restaurant closed

A longtime Johnston fixture, J & D Family Restaurant on Rte. 44 closed on last week for business after the recent passage of Dennis Allaire, former owner. Allaire passed on this past June after a battle with pancreatic cancer and a statement from the family, in part, reads “The Johnston community has supported us through the loss of our father Dennis Allaire and through our desire to keep his legacy going,” the statement read. “We will miss all of you.” J & D hosted a fundraiser this past June to support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Book Sale and more

There will be a lot of activity at the Mohr Library in Johnston on Sept. 21 as The Mohr Library Friends Group will be fundraising with their fall book sale which offers great bargains on books and DVDs.

Also that day there will be a bead exchange from 1 to 3 p.m. where no money is exchanged, only beads and good ideas.

Lighthouses of Rhode Island: a Postcard Display from will also be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when Mr. Andrews will display from an extensive collection amassed over 50 years.

On Sept. 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the library will host Peter Mandel who will speak about how to get your children’s book published now. He is a noted author of 11 picture book and travel contributor to The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and more. For more information, contact the library at 231-4980 ext. 6.

Apple Festival

The North Central Chamber of Commerce will once again host Apple Fest, which is free for the entire family on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22. Nothing kicks off fall quite like the Annual Apple Festival which features crisp air, apple this and that, arts & crafts and commercial vendors, pony rides, wonderful food, fabulous entertainment and more. The value of the book

On Sept. 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the William Hall Library will host The Value of the Book with Ray Rickman. This is a fun, interactive “Antiques Roadshow” type format where you will learn about book values, and what makes a book valuable. Three complimentary estimates will also be offered. The Marian J. St. Brigid’s Mass

of Anointing

St. Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield Street, Johnston, RI, will be holding their quarterly Mass of Anointing on Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m. The mass is being sponsored by the nurses of St. Brigid’s Church. Handmade Prayer Shawls, made by their Prayer Shawl Ministry and blessed by Father Robert Rochon, will be distributed upon request. Those preparing for surgery, suffering from a chronic illness or experiencing spiritual or emotional pain are welcome to come and join us in our healing prayers. Volunteers are available to help with the stairs.

for the Senior Games

The City of Cranston and the Department of Senior Services has announced that this year’s Senior Games will take place on Sept. 21 at Brayton Avenue Field beginning with a Continental Breakfast and Registration at 8 a.m. followed by Opening Ceremonies at 9 a.m. and games beginning by 10 a.m. Participants come from all over RI for friendly competition.

Once again sponsored by CVS Caremark, the Cranston Senior Games invites all seniors, age 55 and older, to participate in Olympic fashion against competitors that come from around the region to compete in a friendly atmosphere.

There will be many challenging events that range from bocce, horseshoes, bowling, billiards, golf, cycling and more. The golfing which will be held at the Cranston Country Club and several other events will take place at various locations throughout the city.

Registration forms are available at Cranston Senior Services, located at 1070 Cranston St. or call 780-6000 to have one mailed to you or download a registration form at www.cranstonri.

com. Not all sports are being played on the 21st and the registration sheet for the events will provide details for each event. The registration fee of $15 per participant includes a continental breakfast, a hot dog roast, and an awards banquet.

Greek Festival in Cranston this weekend

The 28th Annual Cranston Greek Festival will be held at the Church of the Annunciation on the church grounds at 175 Oaklawn Ave. in Cranston. As always, admission is free and the festival will take place under the big tents, rain or shine.

The festival will be open on Sept. 6 from 5 to 10 p.m.; Sept. 7 from noon to 10 p.m. and Sept. 8 from noon to 9 p.m. Free parking is available on the neighborhood streets. Additional parking is available at Cranston West High School. There is a free shuttle bus service from the Cranston West parking lot to and from the festival. Handicap parking is available on the church grounds.

Guests will sample a wide variety of Greek food including roast lamb, Greek style chicken, souvlaki, pastitsio, spanakopita (“spinach pie”) tiropita (“cheese pie”) and Rhode Island’s best Gyros. The pastry booth will feature hand-made Greek pastries, including everyone’s favorite Baklava. Enjoy your Greek pastries with Greek coffee or a cold frappe.

The Orchestra Asteria band will provide live Greek music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. The Odyssey Dance Troupe will perform traditional dances from mainland Greece and the Greek Islands.

A variety of vendors will be selling imported items from Greece including jewelry, CDs, and clothing. A car raffle will feature a Toyota Corolla or $15,000 cash. There will be a Children’s Area with games and crafts. Tours of the church offer the opportunity to learn about the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church; the second largest Christian church in the world.

There will be a fund raiser at Vital Sparks Fitness Center, located at 158 Greenwich Ave., in Warwick on Sept. 7 to benefit Flora’s Heart, a group of dedicated volunteers that hand sew tutus and superhero capes for children undergoing treatment at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
