Free summer field trip

series to the State House

 

The North Central Chamber of Commerce hosts the first event in its free Summer Field Trip series with a trip to the Rhode Island State House on July 29 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Did you know the dome of the State House is the fourth-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world? How about which government offices are located in the building? Come take a tour of the state Capitol and find out all sorts of fascinating information about Rhode Island government and this historic building. All ages are welcome.

4th annual Car &

Motorcycle Show and Run

 

Johnson Police Explorers Post #405 will be hosting its fourth annual Car & Motorcycle Show and Run on Aug. 17 in Johnston Memorial Park.

Car and bike show registration will be 10 a.m. to noon, and the run will leave at 11 a.m. with awards at 3 p.m. The registration fee is $10 per vehicle show and/or run. Bring canned goods to be donated to the Johnston Community Food Bank.

Trophies will be awarded for Judge’s Choice Winner, Best Paint and Bet in Show.

Vendor space (10-by-10) is available for a fee of $50, and tophy sponsorship is also available at $50. There will also be food, music, a 50/50 raffle, vendors, a bounce house and much more for family fun. In case of rain, a rain date will be announced.

Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor recruitment

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State is continuing its drive to recruit male and female mentors for the approximately 100 children who are currently on the waiting list. Boys and girls ages seven to 15 throughout the state are waiting to be paired with a volunteer for six to eight hours a month for a minimum of a one-year commitment. Homeless Animals

Day and Candlelight

Vigil in Cranston

Barbara Morse Silva of NBC10 will be the emcee at Defenders of Animals’ 20th annual Homeless Animals Day/Candlelight Vigil on Aug. 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Governor Sprague Mansion in Cranston. They will be honoring fire and police personnel throughout Rhode Island who have rescued animals. Officers will be receiving plagues from Defenders of Animals. This will be a very special event. At the Mohr

 

Join in the fun at the Mohr Library in July and August for the many programs they have planned. On July 23 they will feature “Smellolgy.” Play “Smeller’s Bingo” and a variety of guessing games, and learn about the sense of smell. Following that on July 30, they will feature “Grossology” when they will share a gross story, have a gross-out talent contest and snack on worms.

On Aug. 6 they will feature “Watershed Science” with Denise Poyer from the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association. They will use giant models and hands-on activities to demonstrate how water flows over land masses.

“Fibonacci Fun” will be on hand Aug. 13, at which time they will do puzzles and investigations to learn about the Fibonacci sequence and how to find it in nature.

Swinging Squares

The Swinging Squares has announced its summer schedule which includes dancing and workshops on Monday nights July 14 and July 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the East Smithfield Neighborhood Center, located at 7 Esmond St. in Smithfield. There is a $60 fee per night and the caller is Bob Butler. For more information, call Lynne at 508-852-7164.
