Mohr Library book sale

The Mohr Library in Johnston will hold its Large Book Sale on both Sept. 20 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sept. 21 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), with a preview for Friends members on Sept. 19 (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.).

There are a great selections at great prices include hardcover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children and young adults. Most prices range from 25 cents to $2. The Friends are a non-profit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

The Friends Bookshelf on the lower level of the library is open for browsing and sales every day during library hours. Donations of gently used books are appreciated, and can be left at the library’s main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available. Still time to purchase your Apple Festival T-shirt

The 27th annual Apple festival is on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21. Make sure you reserve your Apple Festival T-shirt before the festival through the North Central Chamber of Commerce.

It is free admission to the Apple Festival, to be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days in Johnston War Memorial Park at 1583 Hartford Ave. in Johnston. Come and enjoy the crisp air, apple this and that, arts and crafts, commercial vendors, pony rides, wonderful food, fabulous entertainment and more.

Fall plant sale

This fall is great time to add some new perennials, native plants and shrubs to your garden at fantastic prices. The Gentian Garden Club will be having a Fall Plant Sale on Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. The plants are all from members’ gardens. There will be many club members on hand to help visitors pick out those special plants and also to answer any questions. St. Brigid’s

30 Week Club Dinner

The 30 Week Club Committee of St. Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield St., Johnston, will begin accepting guest request and reservations for seating beginning the weekend of Sept. 27-28 prior and after the 5 p.m. Saturday mass and Sundays 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. masses in the foyer of the church. The dinner is being held at the Cranston Country Club, 69 Burlington Road, Cranston, on Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. A full-course family style dinner consisting of soup, salad, macaroni, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, desert and coffee. Entertainment will be by the popular Robert Black. There will be a drawing of a free centerpiece along with the drawing of a 49-inch Smart TV with a two-year warranty, drawing of club members grand prizes totaling over $2,000 as well as our general raffle with a total of over $1,000 in prizes. Penny Social

On Oct. 14, the Ladies Auxiliary-Tabor Franchi VFW Post will host a Penny Social on Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The VFW Post is located at 170 Randall St. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served. For more information, call 401-946-3856.

Pow Science!

Pow Science! At the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, 1 Memorial Ave., will be held on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Teams of up to three participants (grade four and up) will design and engineer an Amazing Tower using the incredible Straws & Connectors building toy. Each member of the winning team will receive a free book. Teamwork, speed and design skills will be pushed to the max in this building challenge. Registration is required. Golf at Senior Games

Are you 55 years old or older? Do you enjoy golf? Don’t miss this opportunity to play 18 holes of golf at the Cranston Country Club for only $60. The 2014 Senior Games Golf Tournament presented by CVS/pharmacy runs for four days. There are still openings for Sept. 25 and Sept. 26. The $60 fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a Senior Games golf towel. MS Jet Pull

Teams of 25 people will pull a FedEx 757 with only their hands at the MS Jet Pull on Sept. 27 at T.F. Green Airport. This fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Rhode Island Chapter provides a unique physical challenge while also helping Rhode Islanders with multiple sclerosis.

To sign up or start your own team, visit www.msjetpull.com. The MS Jet Pull registration fee is $50 per person with a minimum fundraising contribution of $50.

Spectators are invited to cheer on the teams and enjoy fun activities for the family and a delicious BBQ provided by our sponsor Fire Works Catering. The entrance fee for adults is $10, while children under 12 get in for $5 and children under three are admitted for free. No animals are permitted for their own safety, in keeping with airport rules.

The first pull is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., and the action will continue throughout the day. When a team registers, they choose a window of time so they are only required to commit to three hours on event day. Teams get creative with their outfits – from super heroes to angels. Prizes will be awarded in many categories including fastest pull and most team spirit.

After Hours

The North Central Chamber of Commerce invites you to join in on their upcoming Business After Hours at The Find on 6, located at 2953 Hartford Ave., for their fun and productive monthly networking event. Check out the fabulous antiques, network, make connections to help grow your business and enjoy light fare and refreshments. Fall Out of

Summer Festival

Artists’ Exchange will this month be holding its 7th annual Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston. Among the day’s activities will be live music and theater, artisans, art activities and contests, raffles, a scavenger hunt, food trucks and much more. New this year will be a beer and wine garden. The event is scheduled for Sept. 21, with a rain date of Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will take place in the lots surrounding Artists’ Exchange and Citizens Bank. Hall of Fame Induction

The Rhode Island Comedy Hall of Fame is proud to announce the induction of comedian Frank O’Donnell into the Hall this Oct. 4 at 8 p.m., with a comedy roast to be held in Frank’s honor at the newly opened Vets Ballroom (upstairs from the Veterans Memorial Auditorium) in Providence. The night will be emceed by the HOF’s own Charlie Hall, Frank’s close friend and colleague.

Roasters include Secretary of State Ralph Mollis, comedians Rockin’ Joe Hebert and John Morris and radio personalities Brian Mulhern of Cat Country and Steve MacDonald of WHJJ/WHJY. Local actors/producers Kevin Broccoli and Connie Anderson are also scheduled to speak.

Tickets are $35 – with a portion of the proceeds going to the Keri Anne O’Donnell Scholarship Fund – and are available at the Vet’s website, www.vmari.com, or by calling 401-421-ARTS. Tickets are also available at the PPAC box office during business hours.

Happy Birthday to Mickey Mouse on Sept. 19. He first appeared in 1928. “Steamboat Willie” is a 1928 American animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. It was produced in black-and-white by Walt Disney Studios and was released by Celebrity Productions. The cartoon is considered the debut of Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie, despite both the characters appearing several months earlier in a test screening of “Plane Crazy.” “Steamboat Willie” was the third of Mickey’s films to be produced, but was the first to be distributed.
