Pell Manor Holiday Bazaar

Clairborne Pell Manor, located at 1609 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will hold its first annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Community Hall. There will be crafts, games, a white elephant table, a bake sale, raffles, Christmas items and more.

Veterans Memorial Mass

St. Brigid’s Church, located at 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will be hosting its second annual Memorial Mass of Thanksgiving and Remembrance at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8  to honor military service men and women – those who died in the line of duty and those that returned home. Special seating will be available for veterans and their families as well as assistance from the Bishop Hendricken Ambassadors, if requested, to help with the stairs. All veterans and their families are invited.

Holiday food drive with the Chamber of Commerce

Join the North Central Chamber of Commerce in helping feed our community this Holiday season. Both nonperishable items and monetary donations will be accepted at the Chamber office, 255 Greenville Ave in Johnston, and all Chamber events. Families receiving donations will be in the Chamber footprint. Donations are already coming in and will continue through Dec. 10. For more information, contact Deb Ramos at 349-4674.

 

St. Michael’s Church Christmas Bazaar

St. Michael’s Church, located at 80 Farnum Pike in Smithfield, will hold a Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Nov. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Parish Hall. Come and enjoy great food during the bazaar. Breakfast will be served on Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Items to purchase include beautiful handmade scarfs, baby items, hats, fleece blankets and many more crochet and knitted items. Craft items include Christmas ornaments, wreaths and centerpieces, gift baskets and a treasure of resale items in our White Elephant table.

Take a chance at the Penny Social raffle, the grand raffle and the turkey raffles. Delicious homemade items at our Country Store will add to your Sunday dinner. Their used book sale has many treasures for all ages. They also have unique and exclusive items on our silent auction table. Stop by and put in a bid on a silent auction item. Santa will be there on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and pictures with Santa are free!

Monster Fill-A-Truck Fundraiser

Opportunity Knocks will present their first annual Monster Fill-A-Truck Fundraiser on Nov. 15 from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. at PJ’s Pub, located at 198 Putnam Pike in Johnston. The donation for the event is a $10 wrapped child’s toy or a $10 donation at the door. There will be a complementary buffet, music, free parking, raffles and more. Heritage Hills Craft Fair & Bazaar

The North Central Chamber of Commerce and Heritage Hills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, located at 80 Douglas Pike in Smithfield, will hold their Heritage Craft Fair & Bazaar on Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the main dining hall. Tables for rent are $25 each and for more information call Linda Lehany at 231-2700.

Vendors needed

St. Brigid’s Church, located 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will be holding their Annual Bazaar on Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. through 7 p.m. and on Nov. 23 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Several openings for vendors are available. A full table of eight feet is $50, and a half table of four feet is $35. Price includes both days. For more information, please call Fran at 474-6128.

Taste of North Central

Join the North Central Chamber of Commerce for a fun-filled evening on Nov. 6 as they hop on shuttles and spend an evening sampling some of the delicious food from restaurants in our area. Confirmed stops include Bar 101, Enchanting Cake and the Revolutionary Pizza Company, with more to come.

Advance tickets are $20 per person, and senior citizen tickets are just $15. Tickets at pickup locations on the day of the event are $25 and will be available in limited quantity. For more details, contact Kelly Patz at 349-4774.

Trains, Wineries and Treasure of Northern California

Join the North Central Chamber of Commerce for a Colette Vacations presentation of “Trains, Wineries and Treasures of Northern California” on Nov. 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Faial II, located at 566 Plainfield Pike in Greenville. This free presentation will have wine samplings and information about a great trip to Northern California. The trip will depart on Oct. 11, 2015 and return Oct. 19, 2015. More details to come. Congratulations to David Richard Shadoian, who has family in Johnston, on receiving a bachelor of arts degree in political science with a minor in business administration from the University of Rhode Island.

Candlelight Stroll

 

Mark your calendars for the 14th annual North Scituate Village Candlelight Stroll, to be held Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6. Step back in time and embrace the spirit of the season, as well as a wealth of holiday offerings and festivities, at your local shops.

Enjoy Victorian carolers, trolley rides, a live nativity, children’s activities and a visit from the Snow Queen on Friday evening, while Saturday features breakfast with Santa, the village tree lighting, and of course, more shopping.

In addition to the many holiday treasures to be found in the village shops, there will also be unique crafters’ wares at the North Scituate Community House, as well as local church bazaars to peruse. For more information, please call 647-7788.

Armenian Fest 2014

Coming to Rhodes on the Pawtuxet on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 will be this year's Armenian Fest from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The festival will include an Armenian country store, silent auction, jewelry and handcrafts, Armenian book and tape shop, sandwich shop, falafel, a historical Armenian cultural exhibit, flea market, children's activities, gift baskets and more. There will be a main raffle with the first-place winner receiving $2,000, second-place winner getting $500 and third-place winner receiving $200.

Spend the afternoons with live Armenian music and food such as homemade Armenian pastries, delicacies and complete chicken kebab, shish kebab, losh kebab and kufta dinners.

The 2014 Armenian Fest is sponsored by St. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, and admission is free. There will also be valet parking available.

Mentors sought

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State (BBBSOS) is continuing their drive to recruit male and female mentors for the 200-plus kids who are currently on the waiting list. Boys and girls ages seven to 15 throughout the state of Rhode Island are waiting to be paired with a volunteer for six to eight hours a month for a minimum of a one-year commitment.  For information on how you can be a mentor, contact a BBBSOS match support specialist at mentoring@bbbsos.org or 401-921-2434.

BBBSOS will also be holding a collection drive for gently used clothing and small household items. Donations help to raise funds to support mentoring programs. BBBSOS offers convenient free home pick-up of donations and provides a tax receipt. Sarah Joseph Hale, an American magazine editor, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She is also the author of the popular nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation on Oct. 3, 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.
