THE MAZE RUNNER

(Teen sci-fi)

No, it’s not “Lord of the Flies” and it doesn’t hold a candle to “Hunger Games,” but teenagers may enjoy this teen sci-fi movie, where once again they have a chance to save the world.

Dylan O’Brien plays Tommy, the latest boy to be dumped in an area surrounded by a giant maze. Once a month an elevator rises out of nowhere to drop off another teen. The latest deposit is called a Greeny, and he must prove himself before being considered as a Runner. They are the chosen ones who run through the maze every day, looking for a way out.

The Runners have to get out before the giant walls slam shut and they are either crushed or killed by the Grievers, giant spider-like creatures that lurk around the many changing corners.

The gang of all boys is a mixture of race, intelligence, size and disposition. Many have resigned themselves to never getting out, while some still fight to find a way. Tommy is the most curious and determined.

One day a girl arrives. Then the leader gets bitten by a Griever and goes a bit crazy.

The token nasty, suspicious guy (Will Poulter, who always seems to play the bad guy) suspects that Tommy is the cause of all the troubles. Tommy has these bad nightmares and starts to believe that he just may be involved.

Most of the gang eventually make a break for it. And are they in for a big surprise. The audience has probably figured it out by then.

I’m not looking forward to the sequel.

Rated PG-13, with some intense scenes and violence.
