(Woman vs. shark)
While Joyce found the “Woman vs. Shark” drama a bit hokey and the background music a bit over-dramatic, I enjoyed the tension and the great shots of the sea and shore.
“The Shallows” was filmed in Australia where I have snorkeled. Fortunately, I have never encountered a shark there.
Blake Lively – and a few stunt doubles – plays Nancy, a Texas surfer who longs to surf in one of the best beaches in the world.
She commits the biggest sin a surfer or swimmer could commit: she goes into the unfamiliar waters alone. Nancy swims out to a dead whale, feeding ground for a very angry shark who attacks her.
Will she be able to escape?
Well, you can probably guess the answer, but not before a lot of injuries, narrow escapes, near saves, and some other beach-goers who are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Joyce is right about the appearance of a seagull with an injured wing who becomes her companion, and the music does get a bit like “Jaws” at times, but I still enjoyed the scenery and the tense situation.
Rated PG-13, with some tense scenes and lots of blood.
