Webb showed he could unite, not divide

Posted

To the Editor:

Rhode Island is probably the bluest state in the Union, yet a good majority of voters call themselves unaffiliated and until primary season are likely to remain independent of the Republican, Democrat or the Moderate Party.

The local economy is stagnant and needs a jump-start. The need to attract more business to Rhode Island needs to be addressed. The Rhode Island political delegation too long dominated by one party seems to have lost touch and seems out of step with the constituency.

Jim Webb is the most qualified candidate to be President and Commander-in-Chief of the United States. I say this because of his military service in Vietnam as a Marine, time in the Pentagon, Navy Secretary under Ronald Reagan and that he has a solid foreign policy background stemming from life experiences overseas.

Former Senator from Virginia Jim Webb has shown himself as one who will unite and not divide. Webb has and can cross the aisle. He has worked successfully with members of both parties. Perhaps gridlock in congress can be overcome and things might get accomplished in a Webb administration.

I can appreciate as a reader of books that Webb is a published author of both fiction and non-fiction.

When I talk to friends and family about why I support Jim Webb for President, I find name recognition to be the biggest obstacle and I blame that on a biased media.

Some might call Webb “obtuse” or “petulant” after the last Democratic debate. All he tried to do was bring up his lack of time to present his case to the American voters. Webb seems like someone at the ready to act or speak up when backed into a corner. As a former boxer, he’s going to come out swinging if necessary. His actions could be seen as being assertive or aggressive which tells me he won’t back down when our country is threatened or appease anyone if it comes under attack again.

I too can relate to the feelings Webb expressed at the press conferences where he dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination. He talked about feeling like a Republican in a room full of Democrats and vice versa.

It seems the conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans of the past have all gone extinct or at the very least switched parties. No one thinks exactly like Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump. Does anyone adhere to or agree with a party platform word for word?

A statesman in the truest sense of the word not seen since the days of Adlai Stevenson, Webb possesses a strong sense of history and a deep appreciation for tradition. Good qualities that have been lacking for too long among the leadership of this state and this country.

    Dear Russell,

I read the above and I agree that "the local economy is stagnant and needs a jump-start. The need to attract more businesses..."

My name is Richard Corrente and I am running for Mayor in Warwick as a Democrat. I invite you to read my platform at "correntemayorwarwick.com". You will note that I plan on offering a $2,000 tax rebate check to anyone who opens a brick-and-mortar business in Warwick. We have lost 4,666 businesses and 5,800 taxpayers in the last 10 years alone. I have a plan to bring them (and their tax-dollars) back resulting in less taxes for all of us. I also have a plan to stimulate construction for new homes and additions to existing ones. I will eliminate building fees for a two year moratorium. The result will lose permit fee money once and gain additional real estate tax money year-after-year. The effect will allow us to cut taxes for all Warwick taxpayers.

Please read my platform and give me a call. I'd love to talk to you. 401-338-9900.

    Best regards,

    Richard Corrente
