Weekend yard sale to boost scholarship program

“Remember, our annual awards dinner – ‘Night of the Rising Stars’ – is just around the corner,” Deborah Ramos, executive director of the North Central Chamber of Commerce, said last Friday morning during a networking event. “We’ll also have several important events to begin our May schedule.”

One such event is this Saturday’s Chamber Community Yard Sale, which is important on two fronts and will be held at the Anna M. McCabe Elementary School, located at 100 Pleasant View Ave. in Smithfield.

“You must have trash,” Ramos said. “Why not turn it into treasure?”

Ramos announced that the May 2 yard sale will benefit the non-profit’s scholarships, which are annually awarded to high school seniors who attend schools with the Chamber’s footprint.

Ramos said the scholarships will be announced on Tuesday, May 19, during the Chamber’s annual awards dinner.

“This will be our second annual Community Yard Sale,” she said. “We welcome any and all items. If you’re doing spring cleaning at the office, home or garage, why not turn that so-called trash into another man’s treasure and help boost the scholarship fund?”

The yard sale will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and people who need documents shredded may visit from 9 a.m. to noon for a special shredding event.

Ramos also announced that those who want to set up their own display of goods are welcome to be a “vendor” at this Saturday’s yard sale at a cost of only $20. People may set up their display beginning at 6:30 a.m.

For additional information, call Ramos at 401-349-4674.

Ladies & Lipstick

Although the Chamber’s Women in Business Council in previous years and has held many highly successful Lipstick Luncheons and other events, it has never hosted a gathering at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital.

That will change on Tuesday, May 12 – one week prior to the group’s annual awards dinner – when the Chamber teams up with the North Providence-based hospital for what Ramos described as a fabulous ladies’ event that will feature discussion of women’s health topics and provide an opportunity to make new business connections.

The Ladies & Lipstick Health, Wellness and Connections event – to be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. – will also include a healthy breakfast served in Our Lady of Fatima’s executive dining room and three speakers. The cost is $15 per person.

Ramos also reminded Chamber members that Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea will deliver the keynote address at the Tuesday, May 19 “Night of the Rising Stars” awards program.

The title of Gorbea’s speech is, Ramos announced, is “Restarting Rhode Island: Creating opportunities trough transparency, innovation and collaboration.” Tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased at the Chamber office or by calling 401-349-4674. The dinner and awards program will be held at Twelve Acres Countryside Banquet in Smithfield.
