Apparent homicide investigated in Cranston

The death of a woman in Cranston is being investigated as a homicide, according to police, while media reports suggest the son of a late Mafia figure is considered the primary suspect.

Local and state investigators were seen at 245 Bay View Ave. in Cranston’s Edgewood section on Wednesday.

“We’re investigating the death of a female. It appears suspicious,” Cranston Police Maj. Todd Patalano said Wednesday afternoon. “There were immediate signs of foul play.”

Patalano said the department was not releasing additional details regarding the matter, although he said he expected more information to be available later in the day.

He said he could neither “confirm nor deny” a WPRI report that Michael Marrapese, son of the late Frank “Bobo” Marrapese Jr., is the focus of the investigation, nor a WJAR report that Michael Marrapese was being held in police custody in connection with the woman’s death.

Cranston Police arrest records show Michael Marrapese, 40, was arrested at the Bay View Avenue address on Feb. 16 on a charge of disorderly conduct. Online court records indicate he pleaded no contest to the charge on March 4 and received a six-month suspended sentence with six months of probation.

Past arrest logs and online court records indicate Michael Marrapase has faced other charges in Cranston and other municipalities on multiple occasions during the last several years.

“Bobo” Marrapese died in 2017 at age 74 while serving a sentence at the Adult Correctional Institutions. The elder Marrapese was convicted of numerous crimes over the years, including murder.
