Citizenship in the community

The boys and girls of Johnston Cub Scout Pack 20 visited Mayor Joseph Polisena’s office last week, continuing a series of tours in an effort to learn about local government and services.

The scouts asked the mayor a lot of great questions. They ranged from the many shovels on the walls of the mayors office, which he used during groundbreaking ceremonies for businesses in town, to his favorite pictures on his walls-which he said are of his family, his son graduating law school, of Hillary Clinton whom he met twice, as well as the picture of his black Shar Pei dog.

The mayor talked about how he was raised in Johnston and went through the Johnston school system. He told the scouts of his service as a fireman, a nurse and a senator. Polisena also mentioned that he was very happy to see the girls in the Boy Scout program as it reminded him of when he started out in nursing, where it was not common to see men in that profession.

Polisena stressed the importance of education, of getting off of electronic devices and becoming active in the community. He also told the scouts to follow the Scout Law and Oath, and to treat others with respect even if there are disagreements.

Perhaps the most important questions asked by the scouts were about the town turkey, which has been a thorn in the mayor’s side for months. Polisena then told the children that he had asked his wife to make lasagna this year for Thanksgiving. (Submitted photos)
